HP XC System Software Installation Guide Version 3.1

5.6 Task 5: View the Results of the RPM Upgrade
Follow this procedure to view the results of the RPM upgrade process and verify that it was successful:
1. View the log files to see the result of the RPM upgrade process. The log files you view depend upon
the upgrade type:
Major upgrade
a. Use the method of your choice to view the following log file, which contain the results of
the Linux RPM upgrade process; this example uses the more command:
# more /root/upgrade.log
It is expected that you will see RPM upgrade errors in this file; this is typical for standard
Linux upgrades.
Search for the word error in this log file to find upgrade errors. You can safely ignore the
error rpmdb: No such file or directory . These errors are benign.
b. Next, use the method of your choice to view the log file that contains the results of the HP
XC RPM upgrade process:
# more /var/log/postinstall.log
Minor upgrades
Use the method of your choice to view the log file that contains the results of the Linux and HP
XC RPM upgrade process. This example uses the more command.
# more /var/log/yum_upgrade.log
2. You must resolve all failed dependencies and RPM conflicts. See “Troubleshoot the Software Upgrade
Procedure” (page 196) for information about resolving upgrade errors. If you cannot determine how
to resolve these errors, contact the HP XC Support organization at the following e-mail address:
xc_support@hp.com
3. Do not proceed to the next upgrade task until you resolve all RPM upgrade failures.
5.7 Task 6: Install Patches and Re-Install Additional Software
Follow this procedure to install patches and re-install additional software on the upgraded system now,
before the golden image is propagated to all client nodes:
1. Install all patches from the HP IT Resource Center (ITRC) Web site that might be available for HP XC
Version 3.1. “Download and Install Patches” (page 52) describes how to download HP XC patches
from this Web site.
IMPORTANT: You might have to reboot the head node if a patch to the kernel is required; the patch
README file provides instructions if a reboot of the head node is required. You must stop all user
applications during a head node reboot operation.
It is also important to download patches to a directory that is not included in the golden image, as
described in “Download and Install Patches” (page 52).
2. If the system is installed with the HP SFS client software, install all SFS client patches.
3. If a new kernel is supplied in a patch, you must rebuild kernel-dependent modules. See “Rebuild
Kernel Dependent Modules” (page 53) for more information.
4. Reinstall or upgrade any HP, open source, or third-party vendor RPMs that you specifically installed
(for example, debuggers, compilers, and so on) on the HP XC system.
If you need to upgrade or re-install HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share (HP SFS) server or client
software, see the HP SFS Client Installation and User Guide for details.
