HP XC System Software Installation Guide Version 4.0

12 Installing the Maui Scheduler
This chapter describes the steps required to install and configure the Maui Scheduler software
tool to interoperate with SLURM on an HP XC system. Complete the steps in the following order:
1. “Reviewing Readiness Criteria” (page 165)
2. “Preparing for the Installation” (page 165)
3. “Installing the Maui Scheduler” (page 166)
4. “Verifying the Successful Installation of the Maui Scheduler” (page 168)
12.1 Maui Scheduler Overview
The Maui Scheduler software tool is designed to enable flexible and near-optimal scheduling in
a multiresource, high-performance computing environment. Jobs are screened through a large
number of administrator-configurable fairness policies and then prioritized based on such factors
as job queue time, job expansion factor, and user CPU usage history.
The Maui Scheduler maximizes control of system resources by enabling certain nodes to be
reserved for specific users, groups, accounts, or projects. It minimizes the amount of wasted
computer resources by permitting anticipated downtime to be scheduled.
The Maui Scheduler is also a research and analysis tool; it collects a large number of statistics
and can analyze this information to determine the effectiveness of the scheduling approach being
used by Maui and the utilization of the resources available.
NOTE: The Maui Scheduler can be integrated with SLURM. However, the Maui Scheduler is
not supported with the HP XC implementation of LSF with SLURM.
12.2 Reviewing Readiness Criteria
Use the guidelines and requirements listed in Table 12-1 to help you decide whether installing
this product is right for you.
Table 12-1 Maui Scheduler Readiness Criteria
DescriptionRequirement
The Maui Scheduler can be integrated with SLURM on an HP XC system.
However, do not add Maui to SLURM if LSF with SLURM is being used.
System software configuration
You cannot use LSF with SLURM as the resource manager if the Maui
Scheduler is installed to interoperate with SLURM.
Resource management
The procedures described in this chapter have no negative impact on
system availability.
Impact on availability
HP recommends that you have strong Linux system management
experience. Previous experience installing and configuring the Maui
Scheduler is also helpful

12.3 Preparing for the Installation
Before you install and configure the Maui Scheduler, you must understand some background
information and perform some preliminary tasks.
Review the Maui Scheduler Documentation
Before installing and configuring the Maui Scheduler on the HP XC system, review the information
available at the following websites:
