When using a Windows dynamic disk , you can use the logical volume manager to group one or
more physical volumes and use the group as one or more logical volumes. Specifying a logical volume
enables users to back up and restore data without needing to consider any physical volume.
The unit for grouping physical volumes and logical volumes is called a disk group.
In Application Agent dynamic disk configuration, a group of one or more dynamic disks and one or
more logical volume groups allocated to a dynamic disk is called a disk set. In Figure 42, part of the
physical volume A is allocated to the logical volume A, and the rest of the physical volume A and
part of the physical volume B are allocated to the logical volume B. Likewise, the rest of the physical
volume B and part of the physical volume C are allocated to the logical volume C, and the rest of the
physical volume C is allocated to the logical volume D. In this case, a group of the four logical volumes
to which the contents of the three physical volumes are allocated is one disk set (disk set 1). Also, if
you allocate all the contents of one physical volume to one logical volume, you can make a one-to-one
relationship disk set (disk set 2).
In the Veritas Storage Foundation environment, when configured, a disk group is recognized as one
or more disk sets. In this environment, Application Agent backs up and restores data using a disk
group as the minimum unit.
The following figure shows examples of a disk set configuration and of a relationship between a disk
group and a disk set.
