1 HP JetAdmin Printer Management Software Introduction Using HP JetAdmin and other HP supplied software, administrators can configure and manage print servers and network printers, provide better overall printer performance, and share printers in mixed-LAN environments. The HP JetDirect print servers support multiple protocols and multiple network operating systems.
Supported Network Operating Systems Administrators can configure and monitor printers on the following supported network operating systems: ● ● ● ● ● Novell NetWare (including systems with NDPS) Microsoft Windows 95/98 Microsoft Windows NT/2000 IBM OS/2 Warp Server UNIX (HP-UX and Solaris) Up-to-date information on supported operating systems is available on the World Wide Web at http://www.hp.com/support/net_printing.
● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Install and associate Windows printer drivers with a network printer. Configure locally administered address for Token Ring. For TCP/IP, select the IP address, default gateway, and subnet mask. Verify printer status and capabilities. Remotely assign printer default settings including media type, number of copies, page orientation, printer resolution, Resolution Enhancement (REt), print density, and more.
Installation Overview This guide explains how to configure your printer on a supported network using HP JetAdmin. Each chapter of this guide supports a different network operating system (such as Novell, Windows NT, or UNIX) in conjunction with a client operating system. 1. This guide assumes that you have the following: ■ ■ ■ ■ A good working knowledge of your network operating system and your network utilities. A supported network operating system. A fully operational system.
4. Determine how your network is configured and the network protocols that your printer will use (such as peer-to-peer, client/server, using TCP/IP or IPX/SPX. Then, using the appropriate chapter in this guide for your network environment, configure the printer on the network. 5. Distribute the installation software for the printer (printer drivers) to each end user or place disk images of the installation software in a public directory so end users can install the printer software on their computers.

2 Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 3.1 Client) Introduction This chapter explains how to install and use the HP JetAdmin software (version 2.5x and above) on a Windows 3.1 Novell NetWare system. HP JetAdmin allows you to configure the parameters of the HP JetDirect print server for Bindery and native Novell Directory Services (NDS).
Installing the HP JetAdmin Software If the HP JetAdmin software was included on your printer’s CD-ROM, see your printer documentation for installation instructions. If you are installing from the HP JetDirect CD-ROM, use the following installation instructions. 1. Log onto the network with Supervisor privileges at any user workstation. 2. Insert the HP JetDirect CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 3. Use File Manager to browse the CD. Locate Setup.
Configuring a Printer in Queue Server Mode (NDS) Novell Directory Services (NDS) gives you the ability to have NetWare 4.x print queues and print servers in any NDS context. The actual print queue, printer, and print server objects are created using the Novell NWADMIN or PCONSOLE utilities. The HP JetDirect print server is then assigned to this configuration with the HP JetAdmin software using the following procedure.
Create the Print Queue, Printer, and Print Server Objects Using Novell NWADMIN Create a Print Queue 1. Log onto the NDS Tree with Admin privileges and start NWADMIN (nwadmn3x.exe). 2. Select the container where you want to create the queue. 3. Under the Object menu, click Create. 4. On the New Object screen, select Print Queue and click OK. 5. Select Directory Service Queue. 6. Complete Print queue name with a name for the new object. 7.
Create a Print Server 1. Select the container where you want to create the print server and then under the Object menu, click Create. 2. In New Object, select Print Server and click OK. 3. Complete Print server name with the name of the new object and click Create. Assign Objects to One Another 1. Select the printer object. 2. Under the Object menu, click Details and then select Assignments. 3. Click Add, select the queue(s) you want, and click OK. Jobs sent to the printer will be stored in these queues. 4.
Use the HP JetAdmin Software to Configure the Print Server 1. Log onto the network with Supervisor privileges. 2. Double-click the HP JetAdmin icon in the HP JetAdmin Utilities group. 3. The following message may be displayed: “JetAdmin could not find any configured devices on your network. Do you want to configure one now?” Click Yes and go to Step 5. (If this message is not displayed, go to Step 4.
9. Click NetWare Directory Services. Use the arrow key to select the name of the NDS tree (where objects are located) in the Tree Name box. 10. Type the NDS context in the Print Server NDS Context box, then click Next. For example, if the full object name is printserver.marketing.acme_corp then enter the following: OU=marketing.O=acme_corp where OU is the organizational unit(s), and O is the organization. 11. A screen with configuration options is displayed. Click Finish. 12.
Configuring a Printer in Queue Server Mode (Bindery) You can configure a printer in queue server mode on a NetWare 3.x and 4.x (Bindery) network. This mode supports 16 file servers and 64 print queues per HP JetDirect print server port. This mode also prevents other printers from accessing data sent to the configured queue(s) without SUPERVISOR’s intervention.
To Configure the Printer 1. Log onto the network with Supervisor privileges. 2. Double-click the HP JetAdmin icon in the HP JetAdmin Utilities group. 3. To change an existing printer configuration, highlight the printer you want in the list of printers. If your printer does not appear in the list of available printers, select a refresh option from the Device Refresh pull-down menu. Note 4.
8. Click Next. The NetWare screen is displayed. 9. Click Operating Mode, then select Queue Server. 10. Click Queues. To add or remove queues from the list, click Change, add or remove queues for this printer, then click OK. At least one queue must appear in the list of Queues Serviced. 11. Click Next. 12. Click Finish. To verify the configuration, see the section “Verifying the Configuration” in this chapter.
Configuring a Printer in Remote Printer Mode (Bindery) You can configure a printer in remote printer mode on a NetWare 3.x and 4.x (Bindery) network. Remote Printer mode requires a Novell NetWare print server, but allows implementation of forms and provides the best integration with NetWare print utilities (for example, PCONSOLE or NWADMIN). Using PSERVER.EXE, the print server consumes one user license for all printers. Using PSERVER.NLM, the print server does not consume any license slots.
2. Run PCONSOLE and create or modify your selected Novell print server. ■ ■ ■ ■ Configure a printer slot with Type Remote, Other Unknown (or Other Unknown in 4.x). Assign a print queue to the printer slot (printer number). Restart your print server at the server console by typing UNLOAD PSERVER and the name of your print server. Type LOAD PSERVER and the same print server name. 3. Double-click the HP JetAdmin icon in the HP JetAdmin Utilities group. 4.
8. Type a general description of the printer such as the type of printer, options in the printer, and printer location. This description is optional. 9. Click Next. The NetWare screen is displayed. 10. Click Operating Mode, then select Remote Printer. 11. Select the print server’s name in the Novell Print Server box. 12. Select the printer number (assigned in PCONSOLE in step 2) in the Printer Number box. 13. Click Next until the Finish button appears. 14. Click Finish.
Verifying the Configuration To verify the previous configuration steps, either configure a printer to print to the new Novell queue or insert a job into the queue using PCONSOLE. To insert a job into the Novell queue using PCONSOLE v 4.15 or greater, do the following: 1. Run PCONSOLE. 2. Select Print Queues. Press [Enter]. 3. In the Print Queues window, select the desired queue. Press [Enter]. 4. In the Print Queue Information window, select Print Jobs. Press [Enter].
The Status of the job is Ready; it changes to Active after the printer warms up. After the job is printed the job line disappears. This procedure tests the ability of the HP JetDirect print server to service the Novell queue. It also bypasses the Novell client software as well as the Windows printer driver and the Windows operating system. If the file prints by inserting it into the queue, then the HP JetDirect print server is working properly.

3 Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 9x & NT/2000 Client) Introduction This chapter explains how to install and use the HP JetAdmin software (version 3.0 and above) on a Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT 4.0 client in a Novell NetWare environment. HP JetAdmin software allows you to configure the parameters of the HP JetDirect print server for Bindery or native Novell Directory Services (NDS).
Note NDPS (Novell Distributed Print Services) is Novell's next generation printing architecture. NDPS is standard in NetWare 5 and is available for NetWare 4.11 and intraNetWare. For additional information and details on how to obtain the HP IP/IPX Printer Gateway, refer to the JetDirect Administrator’s Guide.
3. Use Windows Explorer to browse the CD. Locate Setup.exe in one of the following subdirectories: ■ ■ For Windows 95/98: Jetadmin/Win95_98//Disk1 For Windows NT/2000: Jetadmin/Winnt_2K//Disk1 where is a language in which HP JetAdmin is provided. 4. Run Setup.exe and follow the instructions on the screen. Once installed, the HP JetAdmin icon appears in the HP JetAdmin Utilities Program Folder in the Windows Start menu.
Configuring a Printer in Queue Server Mode (NDS) Novell Directory Services (NDS) gives you the ability to have NetWare 4.x print queues and print servers in any NDS context. Before you configure the HP JetAdmin software, make sure the following tasks have been performed: ● Internal print servers: The print server is installed in the printer and the printer is connected to a network. ● External print servers: The print server has power and is connected to the printer’s parallel port and network.
To Configure the Printer 1. Log onto the network with Supervisor privileges. 2. Select Start, Programs, HP JetAdmin Utilities, then click HP JetAdmin. 3. The following message may be displayed: “JetAdmin could not find any configured devices on your network. Do you want to configure one now?” Click Yes and go to Step 5. (If this message is not displayed, go to Step 4.) Note If your printer does not appear in the list of available printers, select a refresh option from the Device Refresh pull-down menu. 4.
9. Type the NDS context in the Print Server Context box, then click Next. For example, if the NDS context name is marketing.acme_corp then enter the following: OU=marketing.O=acme_corp where OU is the organizational unit(s), and O is the organization. Note By default, the HP JetAdmin software will display the workstation NDS context as the print server context. If a different context is desired, it may be entered in the Print Server Context box, or click Browse and make a selection. 10.
13. Click Next. The TCP/IP screen is displayed. Changing the TCP/IP settings is optional. When completed, click Next. 14. Click Finish. When asked to save the new device configuration, click OK. Then return to the HP JetAdmin Utility screen and verify that the new device was added. Note EN The appropriate printer driver must be installed on each user’s PC. See your printer documentation for driver installation steps.

6. If you are configuring a new printer, select the LAN hardware address of the HP JetDirect print server attached to the new printer, then click Configure. The address of the HP JetDirect print server is listed on the HP JetDirect configuration page. 7. Type the new name of the printer. This is the name that will appear on the network. 8. Type a general description of the printer such as the type of printer, options in the printer, and printer location. This description is optional. 9. Click Next.

To Access Job Details from Windows 9X and NT/2000 1. Using the right mouse button, click the appropriate printer icon in the Taskbar. 2. Click Jobs. Note Additional status information is available for certain HP printers by double-clicking on the appropriate printer icon in the Taskbar in Windows 9x and NT/2000.
4 Microsoft Windows 95/98 Networks (Peer-to-Peer) Introduction This chapter explains how to install and configure the HP JetAdmin software (version 3.3 and above) for use with peer-to-peer Windows 95/98 networks. (Windows 98 requires HP JetAdmin version 3.3 and above.
HP Desktop Status HP Desktop Status provides printer information to users and administrators. Printer information includes printer status, capabilities, and diagnostic information about the HP JetDirect print server. HP Desktop Status is accessed through a Taskbar icon that is automatically added to the desktop when a new printer that uses HP JetDirect Port is added to the Printers folder.
Installing the HP JetAdmin Software If the HP JetAdmin software was included on your printer’s CD-ROM, see your printer documentation for installation instructions. If you are installing from the HP JetDirect CD-ROM, use the following installation instructions. Note Three installation options are available: ● Network Printing installs the HP JetDirect Port Monitor software. ● Network Printing and Status installs the HP JetDirect Port Monitor and Desktop Status software.
Once installed, the HP JetAdmin icon appears in the HP JetAdmin Utility Program Folder in the Windows Start menu. Note If you are installing the HP JetAdmin software from a source other than the HP JetDirect CD-ROM, see the HP JetAdmin README file that accompanies the software for installation instructions. Note To obtain the latest version of the HP JetAdmin software, see HP Customer Care Online (http://www.hp.com/support/net_printing).
To Configure the Printer 1. Click Start, Programs, HP JetAdmin Utilities, then click HP JetAdmin. 2. Click Device on the menu bar at the top of the main window, then do one of the following: ■ Click New to configure a new printer. - or - ■ Note To change an existing printer configuration, highlight the printer you want in the list of printers in the main window, then click Device, Modify.
7. If you are using TCP/IP, select one of the following. Otherwise, skip to Step 9. ■ ■ ■ Automatically obtain TCP/IP configuration from the DHCP server Automatically obtain TCP/IP configuration from the BOOTP server Manually specify TCP/IP configuration 8. If you selected Manually specify TCP/IP configuration, then do the following: ■ ■ ■ Type the TCP/IP Address Type the Subnet Mask Type the Default Gateway 9. Click Next to display the Optional properties page. 10.
Verifying the Configuration If your printer supports the PCL printer language, follow the steps below to verify configuration. Otherwise, continue to “Configuring Windows 95/98 for Printing.” If the file prints correctly, you have successfully configured your print server. 1. Click Start, Programs, HP JetAdmin Utilities, then click HP JetAdmin. 2. Select the printer. 3. Click Device on the menu bar at the top of the main window. 4. Click Test Page to send a test page to the printer.
Configuring Windows 95/98 for Printing Complete the following steps to configure Windows for printing to an HP JetDirect print server. Before you start this procedure, make sure you have access to the following items: ■ ■ The Windows 95/98 system installation disks or CD-ROM. The printer driver disks or CD-ROM for your printer. 1. From the Windows desktop, select Start, Programs, HP JetAdmin Utilities, then click Add HP JetDirect Printer. 2. Select Easy Setup, then click Next. 3.
4. A message appears indicating you have successfully created a new port and displays its name. Remember this name for future reference and click OK. 5. Select HP in the Manufacturers column, then select the appropriate printer model in the Printers column. Note If your printer is not in the list, you will need to install the driver, following the instructions included with your driver. 6. Click Next. 7. Select the port created in Step 4 and click Next. 8. Type in the name for your printer and click Next.

5 Microsoft Windows NT/2000 Networks (TCP/IP or IPX/SPX) Introduction HP JetAdmin software (version 3.3 and above) has three components to install for Microsoft Windows NT. (Windows 2000 requires HP JetAdmin version 3.42.) The following components are discussed in this chapter: ● ● ● HP JetDirect Port HP Desktop Status (Microsoft Windows NT version 4.
HP Desktop Status HP Desktop Status provides printer information to users and administrators. Printer information includes printer status, capabilities, and diagnostic information about the HP JetDirect print server. Configuring a New or Existing Printer You can use HP JetAdmin to configure a printer that was not automatically configured during the CD-ROM software installation. Before you configure the HP JetAdmin software, make sure the following tasks have been performed: ● Internal print servers: The print server is installed in the printer and the printer is connected to a network. ● External print servers: The print server has power and is connected to the printer’s parallel port and network.
4. If you are configuring a new printer, select the LAN hardware address of the HP JetDirect print server attached to the new printer, then click Configure. The address of the HP JetDirect print server is listed on the HP JetDirect configuration page. 5. If you are using IPX/SPX, type the name of the printer. This is the name that will appear on the network (for example, LJ5_floor2).
11. If desired, click Password, then click the Enable configuration password box. If you do not want to enable a configuration password, go to step 12. ■ If a password is not currently specified, click the New Password box and type a password of up to 12 characters. The password can be any combination of characters on your keyboard.
Configuring Windows NT/2000 for Printing Complete the following steps to set up your Windows NT/2000 system for printing to an HP JetDirect print server. Before you start this procedure, make sure you have access to the following items: ● ● ● The Windows NT/2000 installation CD-ROM. The printer driver for your printer. The HP JetDirect Port, which is installed when you install the HP JetAdmin software (version 3.3 and above). Windows NT 3.51 1. Double-click Print Manager in the main window. 2.
9. Type the name of the port and click Next. The name must not be the name of an existing port, such as LPT1, or an existing DOS device. 10. If a password is not currently specified, click the New Password box and type a password of up to 12 characters. The password can be any combination of characters on your keyboard. 11. If you are changing the current password, click the Current Password box and type the current password, then click the New Password box and type a new password of up to 12 characters.
Windows 2000/NT 4.0 1. From the Windows NT desktop, select Start, Programs, HP JetAdmin Utilities, then click Add HP JetDirect Printer. 2. Select Easy Setup, then click Next. 3. If you want to choose a device from a list of printers on the network, do one of the following: ■ click TCP/IP or IPX/SPX, click Printer List, to select the printer from the list, then click OK. - or - ■ manually specify the printer by selecting the appropriate field and typing the information. Then click Next. 4.
10. To share the printer with others on your network: for Windows NT click Shared, then enter a name in the Share Name box. For Windows 2000, click Share as, then enter a name in the provided box. If you want this printer to support additional platforms, select the appropriate platform names. 11. Click Next. 12. To print a self-test page and confirm that the printer is set up correctly, click Yes. 13. Click Finish to complete the configuration.
Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0 1. Double-click My Computer, then double-click Printers. 2. Double-click Add Printer. 3. Click Network Printer Server, then click Next. 4. Select the server that is sharing the printer, then click OK. 5. Click Finish. The printer is added to the Printers folder on the client and can be used on the client machine. If necessary, drivers are installed on the computer that is going to use the shared device. Windows 2000 1. From the Start menu, click Settings, then Printers. 2.
Accessing HP Desktop Status There are several ways to get the status of a printer on the network: ● ● ● Through the HP JetAdmin software By opening a printer or viewing printer properties in the Printers folder By using a printer icon in the Taskbar Note The icon and printer properties methods are only available if the HP Desktop Status component is installed and running. The icon gives a simple indication of printer status by displaying a small printer icon in the Taskbar.
6 UNIX (HP-UX and Solaris) Networks Introduction This chapter provides information on Hewlett-Packard’s JetAdmin software for UNIX (version D.06.21). As of this writing, this software provides a TCP/IP-based solution for configuring and managing the HP JetDirect print server on the following systems: ● ● HP-UX 10.01 - 10.20 and 11.x host spoolers Solaris 2.5.x and 2.
Network Administrator Features Hewlett-Packard’s JetAdmin software is an administrative tool used to install and configure printers connected to a network using an HP JetDirect print server (network interface). From the HP JetAdmin software you can: ● ● ● ● ● Configure a print server. Change an existing print server configuration. Diagnose printing problems. Track individual print jobs. Batch add or remove print queues from the command line.
● ● Monitor the progress of print jobs when printing to an HP printer connected by an HP JetDirect print server. Receive notification on supported printers when the last page of a print job has exited into the printer’s output bin (if the printer supports true end-of-job and if true end-of-job is turned on). See the online help and the README files for more information on HP JetAdmin software.
How Installing HP JetAdmin Affects Your Network The installation process performs the following functions: ● HP-UX 10.x, HP-UX 11.
Installing the HP JetAdmin for UNIX Software The software can be installed from the following media: ● ● HP Customer Care Online (http://www.hp.com/support/net_printing FTP (ftp.hp.com) Note EN If you are installing from FTP or WWW, see the instructions provided in the INSTALL.UNX file that is with the software.
Running the HP JetAdmin Software The HP JetAdmin software helps the administrator to configure the print server and the spooling system. To run the HP JetAdmin software from the default paths, type the following. If you installed HP JetAdmin in a different directory, the paths might be different. For HP-UX 10.01 - 10.20, 11.x, and Solaris 2.5.x - 2.
The spooling system is a set of programs, shell scripts, and directories that control your printers and the flow of data going to them. This section explains how to use the HP JetAdmin software to configure your network-based printer into the spooling system. 6. Before the software shuts down the spooler to make configuration changes, it prompts you for confirmation. Press [Enter] for the HP JetAdmin software to shut down the spooler. 7. At the prompt, press [Enter] to display the configuration menu. The printer should now be configured in your HP-UX or Solaris spooling system. Modifying the Existing Network Print Queue from the Local Spooler You can modify the existing network spool queue using the HP JetAdmin software. 1. Run the HP JetAdmin software.
