Operating Environment Software Owner manual

roles, security Within SPM, a security role is a set of constraints on access to resources and functions within the
system that may be applied to one or more users of the system.
S
SAN Storage Area Network, usually referring to Fibre Channel technology in practice.
server In this document, a server refers to either an application server or a storage server.
service request A service request is the set of requirements sent to SPM which describes the type and amount of
storage preferred. It is typically initiated by the server administrator.
service
requirement
Service requirements are contained within a service request. Each service requirement consists
of a requirement type (such as, a volume service), a set of constraints (for example, size, RAID
type, tag values), and a set of configurations (including LUN masking, and host OS mode).
SMI-S Storage Management Initiative Specification. SMI-S delivers open storage network management
interface technology in order to have "all storage managed by the SMI interface" as the unifying
factor between all objects that must be managed in a storage area network and the tools used
to manage them.
storage catalog The repository of service requests, services, service groups, and resources managed by SPM.
storage pool A storage pool entry is a means for Matrix OE to track storage within the context of a storage
pool (with one storage pool for each portability group). The storage pool entry contains information
on the needs/requirements (for example, size, RAID level, tags, server initiator WWNs) as well
as the storage meeting those needs (for example, storage controller WWNs, LUN information).
Matrix OE supports three storage pool entry types: one for manual storage specification and two
for fulfillment via the HP Storage Provisioning Manager. As logical servers need storage, they
are associated with one or more storage pool entries.
storage service A storage objective configured across a collection of shared or dedicated resources, continuously
monitored over its lifetime.
storage system An entity that provides storage capacity to a server. Types of supported storage systems include
Fibre Channel disk arrays. Capabilities of storage systems vary by type and are commonly
extended through licensable data services.
subscribed
capacity
The amount of storage within a storage pool that has been promised to clients. Thinly-provisioned
volumes may contribute more to the subscribed capacity of the pool of which they are a member
than they contribute to the committed capacity. Fully-provisioned volumes contribute their total
capacity to both the committed and the subscribed capacity of the pools that contain them.
system A system refers to a storage system or an application server.
T
tag Within SPM, a tag is a string used to mark resources. Users can define new tags as needed.
target Within a storage area network, a target is an endpoint that provides storage through a storage
area network.
template Within SPM, a template is a set of requirements that may be saved within the system and used
to define one or more particular services.
U
unmanaged Within SPM, a storage area network or a storage array is said to be unmanaged if SPM cannot
communicate with its management tool. SPM cannot change the state of an unmanaged network
or array, and must be manually informed of the state of the network or array. SPM is informed
about the state of an unmanaged network or array using XML files created by the user.
unresourced Within SPM, a service is unresourced if it has not yet been activated or if it has been deactivated.
V
volume A logical drive provided by a storage pool that can be presented to a host system.
volume service A type of service supported by SPM. It consists of a service providing a block based volume
abstraction. All services are provided by resources. A volume service is provided by an array.
