Understanding HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage System virtual domains
HP 3PAR Virtual Domain software provides a user-based, restricted access system for managing
storage resources. Using virtual domains, a user can be given private control of their storage
resources, without the ability to see any other users' resources. Storage resources can be managed
and provisioned as necessary.
SPM represents HP 3PAR virtual domains in the form of separate "domain arrays”, one for each
domain defined on the storage system. Components that do not belong to any domain are included
in a domain array called the “–“ domain array or default array. Once imported into the SPM
catalog, HP 3PAR domain arrays and the components they contain can be used like normal arrays
and components.
Firmware version support for virtual domains
SPM does not support virtual domains on versions of firmware earlier than 3.1.1 MU1. For firmware
3.1.1 MU2 or HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2, virtual domains are supported without limitations.
For firmware version 3.1.1 MU1, virtual domains are supported with the following restrictions:
• Empty domains are not visible.
• You cannot create a host in a given domain.
• You cannot determine what domains a domain set is made up of.
Licensing
To enable SPM to see virtual domains on an HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage System, a Domains license
must be installed on the storage system.
Capabilities
The capabilities of a domain array are computed based on the ability of a user to see virtual
domains on the array, and on the access rights granted to the user for each domain. Users with
access to all virtual domains and super privilege are granted all available capabilities. Other users,
including Edit users, are granted only the Management Signatures capability.

Pools
SPM recognizes two kinds of pools: dynamic storage pools and concrete pools.
Importing dynamic storage pool
If a dynamic storage pool belongs to a virtual domain, it will be imported in its corresponding
virtual domain array. If a dynamic storage pool does not belong to a virtual domain, it will be
imported into the default array.
