Implementing RemoteFX on HP ProLiant Servers

2
Introduction
A new role in Microsoft
®
Windows Server
®
2008 R2 SP1, called RemoteFX, provides enhancements to the
Remote Desktop Services, improving the performance and experience of virtual desktop users. This
document gives you instructions for installing RemoteFX on the following HP ProLiant servers. We do not
recommend implementing RemoteFX on other ProLiant servers.
HP ProLiant DL/ML370 G6 Server
HP ProLiant WS460c G6 Workstation Blade with WS460c Graphics Expansion Blade
After installing Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Remote Desktop Services includes the following Remote
Desktop Services roles:
Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH)
Remote Desktop Virtualization Host (RDVH)
Core services (Requires Hyper-V)
RemoteFX: RemoteFX (Requires Hyper-V and the addition of a qualified GPU)
Remote Desktop Licensing
Remote Desktop Connection Broker
Remote Desktop Gateway
Remote Desktop Web Access
For information on installing Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, refer to our integration note “Implementing
Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 on HP ProLiant and Integrity servers” at

Requirements
Table 1 lists the requirements for RemoteFX that are defined by Microsoft.
Table 1. Microsoft Requirements for RemoteFX
RDVH Requirement Description
Processor
The processor in the RemoteFX server must support Second-Level Address Translation
(SLAT). In virtualization scenarios, hardware-based SLAT support improves performance.
With Intel®-based processors, Extended Page Tables (EPT) are the same as SLAT. With
AMD
TM
-based processors, Nested Page Tables (NPT) are the same as SLAT.
GPU The RemoteFX server requires at least one GPU (graphics mezzanine card or full-length
PCI Graphics card). The GPU driver must support DirectX 9.0 and DirectX 10.0. If you
have more than one GPU in the RemoteFX server, the GPUs must be identical. The GPU
must have sufficient dedicated video memory that is separate from system memory.
RemoteFX Encoder The RemoteFX encoder is optional and provides additional scalability on the RemoteFX
server. You must install the hardware encoder card in an x4-speed PCI-express slot or
greater.
Hyper-V Your server must meet the Hyper-V hardware requirements and you must enable the
hardware assisted virtualization options in the server BIOS. The Hyper-V hardware
requirements for Windows Server 2008 R2 are available at the Windows Server 2008
Technical Library (
