Recommended system configuration
Microsoft has established the recommended system configurations listed in this section for Windows Server 2012
Essentials installations. Carefully review this document for the recommended system configurations and possible
issues. Do not use this document as the sole source of information. Additional server configuration information is
available on the Microsoft website at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200132.aspx. Table 1 lists
requirements for server hardware.
You cannot run Windows Server 2012 Essentials on a server with more than two sockets. We recommend configuring
your server with either of the following processor families:
Intel® Xeon® Processors with Intel 64 architecture
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD64) Opteron™ Series Processors
Table 1 Recommended system configuration as established by Microsoft
Component Requirement
Processor Minimum: 1.4 GHz
Maximum: 2 Sockets
Recommended: 2 GHz
RAM per processor (socket)* Minimum: 2 GB
Maximum: 64 GB
Recommended: 18 GB
Monitor SVGA resolution (1024 x 768) or higher
Optical storage DVD-ROM drive
Peripherals Keyboard
Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device
Available disk space
Minimum: 90 GB with a 60 GB system partition
Maximum: No Limit
Recommended: 40 GB
*MB = 1024^2 bytes; GB = 1024^3, and TB=1024^4
MB=1000^2; GB=1000^3; TB=1000^4
A Available disk space is the free disk space on the partition that will contain the system files. Additional space is necessary to
copy the Windows Server 2012 Essentials DVD contents to the disk during the installation. Servers with more than 16 GB of RAM
require more disk space for paging and dump files.
