Introduction HP engineers designed HP ProLiant G6 DL, ML, and BladeSystem servers with more processing, memory, and I/O capacity to support more users, more transactions, or more virtual machines than previous ProLiant servers. These technologies include Intel® Xeon® 5500 series processors based on the Intel® Microarchitecture Nehalem, Double Data Rate-3 (DDR3) memory, HP Smart Array controllers, and HP smart management tools.

in previous-generation Intel architectures. Each QPI consists of two uni-directional links that operate simultaneously in opposite directions with a total bandwidth up to 25.6GB/s. Each uni-directional link consists of twenty 1-bit lanes that transmit up to16 data packets in multiple parallel transfers. Of the remaining lanes, one is used as a clock lane and three are used for clock or data fail-over. Figure 1.

Intel Hyper-Threading Technology Hyper-Threading (HT) Technology lets each core execute two computational threads simultaneously, which allows each four-core processor to simultaneously execute up to eight threads. As a result, HT Technology improves performance-per-watt by allowing ProLiant G6 servers to do more using the same or less power than the previous generation of ProLiant servers.

HP Smart Array technologies The HP Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)-2 Smart Array controllers boost I/O performance to 6Gb/s in ProLiant G6 servers compared to 3Gb/s for SAS-1 controllers. The SAS-2 controllers—Smart Array P410i, P410, P411, P212, and P712—provide administrators with configuration, management, and diagnostic tools for direct attach and storage area network (SAN) requirements.

HP Dynamic Power Capping Typically, processors are responsible for about one-third of the power consumed by a server. This means that the processor indirectly drives the power consumption and heat generation of other server components. By controlling the processor’s power use, administrators can control the entire system’s power requirements.

HP common-slot power supplies Many ProLiant G6 servers have common power slots that accommodate a range of power supplies. These universal, hot-pluggable power supplies allow administrators to “right-size” the power supply for the server configuration. Using HP common-slot power supplies, you can reduce the number of spares in inventory.

HP Remote Management On HP ProLiant 100 series G6 servers, Lights-Out 100i works with HP Systems Insight Manager, RBSU, ORCA, and the embedded Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) to provide entry-level remote management and control.

The software also includes the automated provisioning, optimization, and recovery management capabilities for HP BladeSystem Matrix, a fully integrated converged infrastructure platform for delivering shared services.
