172 Backup, restore, and recovery
CAUTION: The only way to recreate the Resource Management Database is to restore it from the FSE
implementation system backup. This database is critical for other recovery methods, such as recovering the
FSC and recreating FRI. You must always have a backup of this database; otherwise you may not be able
to recover your implementationsystem.
FSE backup types
fsebackup backs up all vital FSE components and data according to the backup type. FSE supports three
types of backup:
server backup
Backup of all required databases stored on the FSE server. Data on FSE clients (HSM file systems and
HSMDBs) are excluded from a server backup.
File System Catalog (FSC) Contains information about the
location of migrated data on FSE
media as well as the Name Space
Catalog with metadata information
on files, and is therefore needed to
access files on FSE media.
FSC recovery (seeFile
System Catalog recovery” on
page 186)
Backup and restore (using any
backup type)
Resource Management Database
(RMDB)
Contains records of all configured
FSE resources. These are library,
drive, pool, and media. In addition,
it stores all relevant resource
information, such as configuration
parameters, resource characteristics,
current status, usage statistics, and
relations to other resources. In case it
is not backed up, the whole resource
configuration is lost.
Backup and restore (using any
backup type)
Configuration Database (CfgDB) Contains currently used and old
revisions of the FSE configuration files
for configured FSE resources; without
it, all FSE configuration files are lost.
Backup and restore (using any
backup type)
Fast Recovery Information (FRI) FRI for all open media volumes is
stored on disk only. It must be
included in the backup since it is not
yet recorded on media.
Recreate FRI (see ”Recreating
Fast Recovery Information
from media” on page 107)
Backup and restore (using any
backup type)
Custom configuration files
Linux specific
On Linux platform, custom configuration
files are located in the directory
/etc/opt/fse.
Windows specific
On Windows platform, custom
configuration files are located in the
directory %InstallPath%\etc.
The value of %InstallPath% depends
on the choice made in the FSE
installation process. It defaults to
C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\FSE.
Tracing, omniORB and backup
configurations are customization files
that hold configurations deviating
from defaults.
Backup and restore (using any
backup type)
