hp StorageWorks File System Extender User Guide 173
Server backup is the preferred backup type because it is the fastest one and includes all data needed
to restore your FSE implementation in combination with recommended HSM file system recovery which
recovers data on clients.
full backup
Backup of all required databases that are stored on the FSE server as well as on FSE clients. You are
able to restore the whole FSE implementation (FSE server and FSE clients) from a full backup. Note that
such backup and a restore from it may be more time consuming, since the data created by full backup
is usually stored on more than one medium and the backup and restores processes use only one drive.
Instead of using full backup, consider using server backup in combination with recovery of the HSM file
system.
single client backup
Backup of a specific FSE client and all its belonging databases that are stored on the FSE server. You
are able to restore the FSE server and a specificFSE client from a single client backup, while for
recreating other FSE clients you need to perform HSM file system recovery.
NOTE: An external FSE client has its file data and extended attributes stored locally, while the FSE
databases (except HSMDB, which is also located on a client) and configuration are kept on the FSE server.
Therefore a single client backup also includes backing up FSE databases on the FSE server.
Methods of retrieving data
The table below lists cases, where specified FSE implementation components are corrupted or lost, and
suggests methods you can use to retrieve your data along with recommendations and further actions, if
needed.
CAUTION: Although there are data recreation methods available other than restoring from the backup
that you can use in case of a disaster, it is strongly advised to make backups of the FSE implementation on
a regular basis. Restoring FSE from its backup is also the most reliable restore method.
