HSM file system filter The function of this module is to intercept relevant file system events for the FSE implementation
and to report them to the Hierarchical Storage Manager. On Linux platform, the filter is a kernel
module providing the HSM file system that is built on top of the Linux native Ext3 file system. On
Windows platform, the filter is a kernel driver and intercepts all accesses to the Windows native
NTFS file system.
implementation
(FSE implementation)
HP StorageWorks File System Extender. Hardware with installed FSE software. FSE hardware
includes a tape library with drives, slots, media, and a changer, which is connected to the FSE
server host machine via a SCSI interface. See alsosoftware (FSE software)”.
initialization A process that labels the medium volume header on each volume found on a medium and
adds the corresponding FSE medium volume entry to the Resource Management Database. If
an FSE medium or FSE medium volume contains valid FSE user data and you want to initialize
it, you must use forced initialization.
job
(FSE job)
A process, executed by Partition Manager or Management Interface, which executes migration,
release, recall, deletion, and administrative, recovery, and maintenance processes. Migration
and recall jobs and the release process are triggered by their respective policy, whereas other
processes, such as explicit release and deletion, administrative, recovery, and maintenance
jobs, are triggered on the FSE user's request with FSE commands.
library
(FSE library)
A SCSI tape library attached to and configured for use in the FSE implementation.
Library Agent (LA) An FSE agent that handles requests for moving the FSE media between tape drives and library
slots and triggers media barcode rescans. The Library Agent process name is fse-la-s.
Limited Access Mode
(LAM)
One of the two HSM file system filter operational modes. When the HSM file system filter is
operating in Limited Access Mode for a particular HSM file system, you are only allowed to
browse the directory tree on the HSM file system or read the online data from it. You cannot
create, rename, move or delete directories and files, nor change their data or metadata.
Offline data is not recalled from FSE media; instead, the application that is accessing the file
receives an error. Limited Access Mode does not need FSE processes to be running on the FSE
client. However, if the processes are running, three data movement processes (migration,
release, deletion) can be executed – by being either triggered explicitly or started according to
the configured FSE partition policies. See alsoFull Access Mode (FAM)”.
low watermark A user-defined value for a level of disk usage on an HSM file system. When this value is
reached, a regular release process is stopped.
LTO Ultrium A Linear Tape-Open (LTO) tape format and tape drive product family from HP, IBM, and
Seagate. FSE supports HP LTO Ultrium 1, 2, and 3 series of tape media, and HP LTO Ultrium 1,
2, and 3 series of tape drives. See alsomedium (FSE medium)”.
maintenance job One of the FSE job types that performs maintenance tasks in FSE, namely, the File System
Catalog (FSC) consistency check and recreation of redundant migrated data copies.
Management
Interface (MIF)
An FSE daemon/service, responsible for accepting, handling, and executing requests for user
actions, issued through the FSE command-line interface. It also starts and manages execution of
the administrative jobs. The Management Interface process name is fse-mif.
media duplication A process that creates an exact copy of an FSE tape medium. In case of emergency, a medium
duplicate can directly replace the original.
media pool
(FSE media pool)
A common storage for the migrated HSM file system data. It groups FSE media of the same
type into a logical unit, which is tracked as a group. FSE media inside the same FSE media
pool share such characteristics as number of medium volumes (tape partitions), system volume
feature, capacity of medium volumes, and so on. Media pool types are: regular, WORM, and
backup. Each FSE partition has at least one regular FSE media pool assigned to it. One media
pool cannot be assigned to multiple partitions.
