hp StorageWorks File System Extender User Guide 263
release candidate An online file that is scheduled for release and that has either been migrated or was brought
online by recall.
release candidate list A list of online files that have already been migrated or that have recently been recalled and
are waiting to be released. The list is maintained by the Hierarchical Storage Manager.
release policy A set of rules by which the release process for files on a release candidate list is initiated.
Configuration parameters for the release policy are specified in the FSE partition configuration
file. Each FSE partition has its own release policy.
resource
(FSE resource)
Either an FSE partition, FSE library, FSE drive, FSE media pool, or FSE medium including
medium volumes. Each FSE resource is configured using an FSE configuration file and has an
entry in the Resource Management Database.
Resource
Management
Database (RMDB)
A database with records of all configured FSE resources. It contains all relevant resource
information, such as configuration parameters, resource characteristics, current status, usage
statistics, and relations to other resources. The Resource Management Database is located in
the directory /var/opt/fse/rmdb (on Linux platform) or in the directory
%InstallPath%\var\rmdb directory (on Windows platform).
Resource Manager
(RM)
An FSE daemon/service responsible for managing data in the Resource Management
Database, allocating and releasing FSE resources and providing resource information to other
FSE daemons/services and processes. The Resource Manager process name is fse-rm.
restore
(FSE restore)
A process that recreates the FSE system components from the FSE backup, stored on one or
more FSE media. The restore is needed after the user data on the HSM file system or FSE system
data is damaged or lost due to a disaster. When the restore is completed, the FSE system is
returned to a fully operational state. A restore job is triggered explicitly on an FSE user's request
with the fserestore command.
retention time A defined period of time for files on the release candidate list during which a file is kept online
(after it was migrated or recalled) before it is released. The retention time is reset when any of
following changes: file contents, standard attributes, time stamps, permissions, or ownership.
Samba Software that allows a Linux server to act as a file server to Windows clients. A Samba server
must be running on the machine that hosts the HSM file system to allow Samba clients to access
the HSM file system. See alsoCIFS”.
secondary storage
space
A space on FSE media controlled by the FSE implementation. Secondary storage space
transparently extends primary storage space, which is the HSM file system. It has to be
configured, formatted, and initialized before it can be used.
server
(FSE server)
A set of FSE daemons/services that are responsible for managing the configured FSE resources,
accepting and executing user commands, executing all types of FSE jobs, and monitoring and
operating the FSE implementation. These daemons/services are: Resource Manager,
Management Interface, Partition Manager, Library Agent, and Back End Agent.
Service An FSE daemon/service which launches other FSE daemons/services and agents. The Service
process name is fse-svc.
shared library
(FSE shared library)
A proprietary dynamically loaded library, included in the FSE package, that is used by the FSE
processes.
slack space
(FSE slack space)
Space on FSE media that is occupied by the migrated file generations that were treated as
obsolete by the FSE reorganizational scan job. The FSE medium volumes with a relatively high
slack space percentage should eventually be reorganized and reused.
slot
(FSE slot)
A physical place in the FSE library that holds a single FSE tape medium when it is not loaded
in an FSE drive. FSE slots have their entries in the Resource Management Database.
