This release of the providers and installing ESXi 5.0 Patch ESXi500-201112001 available at
http://www.vmware.com/patchmgr/findPatch.portal fixes this issue.
NC542m/NC543i - Second port not configurable within VMware's vSphere/vCenter software
For HP devices requiring the ESXi 5.0 Mellanox mlx4 network driver that have more than one
port and are in a nonHP-Flex environment, the second port appears to the VMware operating
system as a pseudo-device of a single device function. VMware’s vCenter GUI does not comprehend
this device type and shows the device as unknown. This can be circumvented by configuring the
device via the command line of the host (remote or local). This issue is not seen on NC542m devices
in a Flex-10/FlexFabric environment due to the fact that this environment causes all network
devices to be presented to the ESX/ESXi host as separate functions. This will be resolved in a future
VMware operating system release.
NC55xx/CN1000E/CN1100E - Only four or less physical NIC ports may be enabled
For HP devices requiring the ESXi 5.0 Emulex be2net network driver, only four or less physical
NIC ports may be enabled and presented to the operating system at install time. The be2net
driver included in this release requests an amount of heap memory allocation, that is less than the
memory required for more ports, to be available during install time. This image includes an hp-added
package resolves the issue near the end of the installation process by increasing the heap memory
allocation for thebe2net module to an appropriate amount to support VMware’s 8 physical 10Gb
NIC port limit for ESXi 5.0. After initial install, additional ports may be added/re-enabled up to
the 8 port limit. Emulex plans to address this issue in a future be2net driver release.
System Memory required for installing ESXi 5.0 Customized Image
VMware ESX and ESXi will not install on an HP Gen8 server with 2 GB or less system memory.
Although VMware’s stated minimum installation requirement is 2 GB of system memory, HP’s Gen8
platforms do not expose enough of the 2 GB of system memory to the operating system, causing
the installation to fail. This issue is resolved by populating the system with more than 2 GB of
memory.
