6.2 Sample Collection
Samples can be collected from an indwelling catheter or using direct venipuncture.
Fill Volume
NOTE:Alwaysensurecollectiontubesarelledtotheindicatedllvolume.
NOTE: At altitudes greater than 2500 feet above sea level, blood collection
tubesmaynotlltothespeciedvolume,whichresults in an incorrect
ratio of blood to anticoagulant. Users at these elevations should use
tubes designed for high altitudes or refer to their facility’s blood collection
protocolsforinstructionstoproperlyllbloodcollectiontubes.

6.2.1 Peripheral Samples
Perform the following procedure for sample collection directly into vacuum collection tubes:
NOTE: For an Aspirin or IIb/IIIa Test, whole blood may be collected from peripheral venous or arterial sites.
Materials
You will need the following materials:
• Discard tube – may be a tube with no additive, sodium citrate, blood culture, or heparin tube (IIb/IIIa
test only). The tube cannot contain EDTA (purple top).
• ForthespecicVerifyNowTestsampletube,refertoTable 2-1 Sample Collection Tubes
• 1 Label with patient ID (optional)
Sample Collection Procedure
Collection of blood sample should be performed with care to avoid hemolysis or contamination by tissue
factors.
1. Whole blood may be collected from venous sites using a 21 gauge or larger (e.g. 18-20 gauge)
needle in an appropriate blood collection tube. Blood samples should be obtained from an extremity
free of peripheral venous infusions.
2. Collectadiscardtuberst(approximately2mL).ThediscardtubemustnotcontainEDTA.
3. If drawing for a CBCatthesametime,lltheCBCtubelast to avoid contamination by EDTA.
4. Fillthesecondtube(sampletube)totheblackline(Figure6-1).Donotunderll.
NOTE: Label the sample tube with the patient ID, date, and time it was drawn. Dispose of blood collection supplies
according to your institution’s policy.
5. Discardthersttubeinabiohazardwastecontainer.Keepthesecondtubefortesting.Labelthe
second tube with the patient ID, date, and time it was drawn. Dispose of blood collection supplies
according to your institution’s policy.
