6. Gently invert the sample tube 5 times to ensure complete mixing of the contents.
7. Blood must equilibrate at room temperature (18 °C to 25 °C) for a minimum of 10 minutes after
collection before testing, but no longer than 4 hours. Do not place the sample in a water bath or on
a rocker plate.
NOTE: Re-draw sample if there is evidence of hemolysis or clotting in any other tube that was collected at the
same time.
6.2.2 Indwelling Catheter
Perform the following procedure for sample collection from an indwelling catheter:
NOTE: For an Aspirin or IIb/IIIa Test, whole blood may be collected from venous or arterial sites.
DO NOT use an Intravenous Catheter
Materials
You will need the following materials:
• ForthespecicVerifyNowTestsampletube,refertoTable 2-1 Sample Collection Tubes
• 1 Label with patient ID (optional)
Sample Collection Procedure
Collection of blood sample should be performed with care to avoid hemolysis or contamination by tissue
factors.
1. Whole blood samples that are obtained from an indwelling catheter should be collected after
sufcientdiscard(approximately5mL)hasbeendrawntocleartheline.Ensureindwellingcatheter
is free of clots. When using a syringe transfer blood to the sample collection tube immediately
after collection.
NOTE: If blood is to be transferred using a needle, the size must be 21 gauge or larger (e.g. 18-20 gauge).
2. If drawing for a CBCatthesametime,lltheCBCtubelasttoavoidcontaminationbyEDTA.
3. Fillthesampletubetotheblackline(Figure6-1).Donotunderll.
NOTE: Label the sample tube with the patient ID, date, and time it was drawn. Dispose of blood collection supplies
according to your institution’s policy.
