SECTION II GETTING READY TO SEW Connecting Machine to Power Supply Before connecting the power cord, make sure the voltage and frequency shown on the machine conform to your electrical power. r For Use of the Foot Control: * Turn off the power switch, and insert the foot control plug q and the machine plug w into the machine and the power supply plug e into the wall, in this order.
Main Function of Keys w e r t y ui q o q w e r q Reverse Button During straight stitching , zigzag stitching and multiple zigzag stitching , press and hold the reverse button. The machine will sew in reverse until you release the button. During utility stitching and decorative stitching, press this button and the machine will sew an auto-lock stitch and stop automatically.
y Stitch Length Control Key Stitch width and stitch length will show on the display. To decrease the stitch length, press the “–” key. The stitch length will decrease. To increase the stitch length, press the “+” key. The stitch length will increase. y u Memory Key When this key is pressed after selecting a pattern, the pattern will be memorized as many times as the key is pressed.
Winding the Bobbin w t q • Set the Spool Lift up the spool pin and place the spool of thread on it with the thread coming off the spool as shown. Press the large spool holder firmly against the spool of thread. * The small spool holder is used with small or narrow spools of thread. e q Spool pin w Ordinary spool e Large spool holder r • Removing the Bobbin q Gently slide the hook cover plate release button to the right and remove the cover plate. Lift out the bobbin.
• Inserting the Bobbin z z Place the bobbin in the bobbin holder with the thread running counterclockwise. x Guide the thread into notch A on the front side of the x A B c bobbin holder. Draw the thread to the left, sliding it between the tension spring blade. Continue to draw the thread lightly until the thread slips into notch B. Pull out about 15 cm (6") of thread. c Attach the hook cover plate. Check the threading by referring to the chart shown on the hook cover plate.

• Needle Threader z z Raise the needle to its highest position. Pull down the needle threader knob as far as it will go. x x Turn the knob in the direction of the arrow in the illustration, then insert Hook q into the needle eye. Lead the thread around Guide w and under Hook q. q Hook w Guide w cv q c Turn the knob in the direction of the arrow in the illustration, drawing the thread loop through the needle. v Pull the thread through the needle eye.
• Drawing Up the Bobbin Thread ¡ ¡ Raise the presser foot. Hold the needle thread lightly with your left hand. ™ ™ Press the up/down needle position key twice to pick up the bobbin thread. Draw up the needle thread together with a loop of bobbin thread. q Up/down needle position key q £ £ Pull 10 cm (4" ) of both threads to the back under the presser foot.
SECTION III BASIC SEWING Straight Stitching w q Selected stitch w A: Zigzag foot q 01 A 2 6 • Starting to Sew Raise the presser foot and position the fabric next to a seam guide line on the needle plate (see page 16). Lower the needle to the point where you want to start. Lower the presser foot and pull the threads toward the back. Depress the foot control. Gently guide the fabric along a seam guide line letting the fabric feed naturally.
• Adjusting Stitch Length Manually 01 When you press the stitch length key , the pre-programmed setting (2.2) will appear on the screen. It can be set between 0 and 5. A 2 6 Press the minus mark and the number on the screen will get smaller, and the stitch length will get shorter. Press the plus mark and the number on the screen will get bigger, and the stitch length will get longer. * 01 L 1.0 W3.5 L 2.2 L 2.2 The reverse stitch length cannot be set longer than 2.5 mm (3/32" ). Variation of Straight Stitching q w • Straight Stitch When the machine is turned on, it’s automatically set to sew a straight stitch. This stitch can be used for regular seams, zippers, topstitching, etc. q Selected stitch w A: Zigzag foot • Locking Stitch Lower the needle close to the front edge of the fabric. The machine will sew several locking stitches in place and continue sewing forward.
Adjust the Top Thread Tension • Choose the Correct Tension For Straight Stitch: e r q Results depend on; w y t 5 4 The ideal straight stitch will have threads locked between the two layers of fabric, as shown left (magnified to show detail). If you look at the top and bottom of the seam, you will notice that there are no gaps; that each stitch is smooth and even. When adjusting top thread tension, the higher the number, the tighter the top thread.

Changing Needles z x z Raise the needle by pressing the up/down needle position key and lower the presser foot. Turn off the power switch. Loosen the needle clamp screw by turning it counterclockwise. w q x Remove the needle from the clamp. Insert the new needle into the needle clamp with the flat side to the rear. When inserting the needle into the clamp, push it up as far as it will go and tighten the clamp screw firmly.

SECTION IV UTILITY STITCHING w e Overcasting q Selected stitch w A: Zigzag foot e C: Overedge foot q 07 A 3 7 * Set the stitch width at 5.0–7.0. • Zigzag Stitch This stitch can be used on most woven fabrics. It’s the fastest way to finish an edge, leaving it neat and flat. A dense zigzag can also be used for applique. q C: Overedge foot Set the stitch width from 5.0 to 7.0 when the overedge foot C is used to prevent needle breakage or damaging the foot.
Buttonhole • Buttonhole Variations SEN R 1 5 Square Buttonhole: For buttonholes on shirts and blouses. AUT R 1 5 Rounded Buttonhole: For buttonholes on shirts and blouses made of fine fabric. BH2 R 1 5 Keyhole Buttonhole: For buttonholes on jackets. BH3 R 1 5 Sensor Buttonhole • Preparation for Sewing q w Attach the automatic buttonhole foot R. Make sure the groove on the holder catches the pin on the foot when lowering the presser foot.
Sensor Buttonhole, cont’d x R x Pull the button holder to the back, and place the button in it. Push it together tightly on the button. q Button holder w If the button is extremely thick, make a test buttonhole. If it is difficult to fit the button through the test buttonhole, engthen the size by pulling the button holder on the back to increase length. q w Gap c c Pull the buttonhole lever downward as far as it will go. e e Buttonhole lever v Draw both threads to the left under the foot.
Sensor Buttonhole, cont’d n n Remove the fabric and place a pin just before the bartack at each end to prevent accidentally cutting bartacks. Cut the opening with the seam ripper. When buttonhole sewing is finished, push the buttonhole lever upward as far as it will go. i o !0 Note: Make sure there is no gap between the slider and the spring holder. If there is a gap, the length of the rows will be different, as shown. i o !0 !1 Slider There shoud be no gap.

Depress the foot control. The machine will automatically bartack and sew up the right side of the buttonhole. n Stop the machine when you are 2 or 3 stitches past the first stitch on the left hand side. m Press the reverse button.
Corded Buttonhole z q z For sewing, use the same procedure as the sensor buttonhole (see pages 21–23 ). * SEN R 1 5 w e x r Set the stitch width to match the thickness of the cord used. With the buttonhole foot raised, hook the filler cord on the spur at the back of the buttonhole foot. Bring the ends toward you under the buttonhole foot, clearing the front end. Hook the filler cord into the forks on the front of automatic buttonhole foot R to hold them tight.

Zipper Sewing, cont’d x x Sew through all layers next to fold. Stop just before the zipper foot reaches the slider on the zipper tape. Lower the needle slightly into the fabric. Raise the zipper foot and open the zipper. Lower the foot and stitch the remainder of the seam. q q Slider w 5 cm (2" ) w c Close the zipper and spread the fabric flat with the right side facing up. Baste the opened fabric and zipper tape together.

Lower the presser foot. Adjust the position of needle swing with the stitch width key so that the needle just pierces the folded edge of the fabric when the needle comes over to the left side. w Rolled Hem q Selected stitch w D: Hemmer foot q z z Make a double 0.25 cm (1/8" ) fold approximately 8 cm (3" ) in length. x x Lower the needle into the fabric at the point where sewing is to begin and lower the hemmer foot. Sew 3 or 4 stitches while holding the needle and bobbin threads. c Lower the needle into the fabric and lift the hemmer foot. c Insert the folded portion of the fabric into the curl of the hemmer foot.
SECTION V DECORATIVE STITCHING Shell Stitch w q 13 F 6 8 q Selected stitch w F: Satin stitch foot * Use a lightweight fabric such as tricot. Fold and stitch on the bias. Set the stitch width and length as you desire. You may need to tighten the top thread slightly. Allow the needle to just clear the folded edge of the fabric when it zigzags. If you sew rows of shell stitches, space the rows 1.5 cm (5/8" ) apart. You can sew shell stitches on knits or soft silky wovens in any direction.
Decorative stitch w q 19 F1 4 q Selected stitch w F: Satin stitch foot For a delicate appearance on fabric such as chiffon, use a single layer with a tear-away backing, if necessary. Scallop Hems w q Selected stitch w A: Zigzag foot q 23 Pattern No.23 can be used to attractively finish the edges of collars, pockets and place mats. F1 4 e To edge a collar, place interfacing between upper and under collar and sew the pattern on the seam line.
Cording q q Selected stitch w H: Cording foot w 22 Sew over one strand of cording to create a pretty swirled design on a jacket or vest or sew over three strands of cording for border trims. Pearl cotton, knitting yarn, embroidery floss, lace thread, fine wool or lily yarn can be used for cording. F 1 4 z x (Triple cording) e c z Mark the design on the right side of the fabric.
Quilting w q Selected stitch w A: Zigzag foot q 01 A 2 6 z The quilting guide will help to keep the stitching lines straight. q z Loosen the quilter screw. w e Slide the quilter in the opening to the desired width and tighten the screw. q Quilter holding screw w Quilter e Hole x Sew, guiding the quilter over the previous row of stitching.
Adjusting Pattern Balance If stretch stitch patterns are uneven when you sew on a particular fabric, adjust them with the feed balancing dial. q Feed balancing dial w Standard mark e Setting mark q w e To Adjust distorted patterns: (+) 36 ( ) * If patterns are compressed, correct by turning the dial in the direction of “ + ”. * If patterns are drawn out, correct by turning the dial in the direction of “ – ”.

SECTION VI CARE OF YOUR MACHINE Care of Your Machine z * * * * xc * Press the up/down needle position key to raise the needle and unplug the machine before cleaning. Do not dismantle the machine other than explained on this page. The machine never needs oiling. Do not store the machine in a high-humidity area, near a heat radiator or in direct sunlight. Clean the outside of the machine with a soft cloth and neutral soap. Cleaning the Hook Race and Feed Dog z Remove the presser foot and needle.
Troubleshooting Cause Condition The needle thread is not threaded properly. The needle thread tension is too tight. The needle is bent or blunt. The needle is incorrectly inserted. The needle thread and the bobbin thread are not set properly under (drawn to the rear of) the presser foot when sewing is starting. 6. The fabric is not drawn to the rear when sewing is finished. 7. The thread is too heavy or too fine for the needle.
