Operating Temperature Instructions (cont'd) Regulation Due to the nature of the typical gas water heater, the water tem_oerature in certain situations may vary up to 30°F higher or wet at the point of use such as, bathtubs, showers, sink, etc. Turn the water temperature dial clockwise (ff"_) to decrease the temperature, or counterclockwise (_",_) to increase the temperature.
Service and Adjustment Tank (Sediment) Cleaning Burner Sediment build-up on the tank bottom may create varying amounts of noise, and if left in the tank will cause premature tank failure. In some waterareas, you may not be able to drain all sediment deposits by simply draining the tank. In these cases MagErad (part no. 23600) can be used to help remove the sediment deposits. This may be ordered from the Sears Service Center. Forordering, referto the "Repair Parts"section.

Troubleshooting Guide Start Up Conditions THERMAL EXPANSION HOT COLD Water supply systems may, because of such events as high line pressure, lrequent cut-offs, the effects of water hammer among others, have installed devices such as pressure reducing valves, check valves, back flow preventers, etc-.to control these types of problems. When these devicesare not equipped with an internal by-pass,and no other measures are taken, the devicescause the water system to be dosed.
Troubleshooting Start Up Conditions Guide (cont'd) (cont'd) CONDENSATION SMOKEIODOR Whenever the water heater is filled with cold water, a certain amount of condensation will form while the burner is on. A water heater may appear to be leakingwben in fact the water is condensation. This usually happens when: • When a new water heater is fdled with cold water for the first time.
Troubleshooting HIGH TEMPERATURE SHUT OFF Guide (cont'd) SYSTEM AWARNING Due to the nature of the typical gaswater heater, the water temperature in certain situationsmay be hotter than the thermostatsetting. Short, frequent drawsof hot water - especiallywith very coldincomingwater - canshockthe thermostatintobrief operation resulting in hotter and hot_cerlayersof water closerto the top ofthe tank. Changesin.
Troubleshooting Guide (cont'd) Leakage Checkpoints Use this guide to check a "Leaking" water heater. Many suspected _Leakers" are not leaking tanks. Often the source of the water can he found and corrected. ACAUTION I Read this manualfirst. Then before checkingthe water I ] heater make sure the gas supply has been turned I "OFF", and never turn the gas"ON" beforethe tank is I completelyfull of watur.
