8. STARTING THE ENGINE

Procedure for Starting a Cold Engine
WARNING
Never run an engine in an enclosed area. Carbon monoxide exhaust
gas is poisonous and can cause severe injury or death. Always start
engines outdoors.

POTENTIAL HAZARD
Freezing control cables in cold weather.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
You could be unable to control the vehicle, which could lead to an
accident or collision.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
When riding in cold weather, always make sure all control cables work
smoothly before you begin riding.
CAUTION
You must allow your vehicle adequate warm up time before operating or
engine damage could result.
1. Apply the brake.
2. Shift the drive select lever into the neutral position.
NOTE: When the drive select lever is in the neutral position, the neutral
indicator light should come on. If the neutral indicator light does not
come on, ask a dealer to inspect the electric circuit.
The engine can be started in any gear if the brake is applied. However,
it is recommended to shift into neutral before starting the engine.
3. With your foot off the accelerator pedal, start the engine by turning
the key to “START”.
NOTE: If the engine fails to start, release the key, and then try starting
again. Wait a few seconds before the next attempt. Each cranking
