Chapter 5 – Troubleshooting
Yourmodemwastestedbeforeitwasshippedtoyou.Ifyoucan’tmakeasuccessfulconnection,orifyou
experiencedatalossorgarbledcharactersduringyourconnection,itispossiblethatthemodemis defective.
However,itismorelikelythatthesourceofyourproblemlieselsewhere.The
followingsymptomsaretypicalof
problemsyoumightencounter:
● NoneoftheLEDslightwhenthemodem is on.
● Themodemdoesnotrespondtocommands.
● Themodemdialsbutisunabletomakeaconnection.
● Themodemdisconnectswhileonline.
● Themodemcannotconnectwhenanswering.
● Dataisbeinglost.
● Therearegarbagecharactersonthemonitor.
● Themodemdoesn’tworkwithCallerID.
● Faxanddatasoftwarecan’trunatthesametime.
NoneoftheIndicatorsLight
Whenyoupluginthemodem,theoperatingsystemdetectsandconfiguresthemodem,andtheTRLEDshould
comeon.
IftheTRLEDdoesnotcomeon,ensureyouhaveinstalledthedriverasdescribedinChapter2.
TheModemDoesNotRespondtoCommands
● Makesureyouareissuingthemodemcommandsfromdatacommunicationsoftware,eithermanuallyin
terminalmodeorautomaticallybyconfiguringthesoftware.(Youcannotsendcommandstothemodemfrom
theDOSprompt.)
● Makesureyouareinterminalmodeinyourdatacommunicationprogram,thentypeATandpressENTER.If
yougetanOKresponsefromyourmodem,yourconnectionsaregoodandtheproblemlikelyisinthe
connectionsetupinyourcommunicationsoftware.
● TryresettingyourmodembyunpluggingtheUSBcablefromthemodem,andthenpluggingitbackin.
● Tryrebootingthecomputer.
● Themodemmighthaveaproblembeyondthescopeofthisuserguide.IfyouhaveanotherMulti‐Tech
modem,tryswappingmodems.Iftheproblemgoesaway,thefirstmodemispossiblydefective.
TheModemCannotConnectWhenAnswering
● Autoanswermightbedisabled.Turnonautoanswerinyourdatacommunicationsprogramorsendthe
commandATS0=1(ATS0=2ifyouhaveCallerIDservice)tomakesureyourmodeminterminalmode.
