● IfthemodemreportsNOCARRIER,thephonewasansweredattheotherend,butnoconnectionwasmade.
Youmighthavedialedawrongnumber,andapersonansweredinsteadofacomputer,oryoumighthave
dialedthecorrectnumber,buttheothercomputerorsoftwarewasturned
offorfaulty.Checkthenumber
andtryagain,ortrycallinganothersystemtomakesureyourmode misworking. Also,trycalli ngthenumber
onyourtelephone.Ifyouhearharshsounds,thenanothermodemisansweringthecall,andthemodems
mightbehavingproblemsnegotiatingbecauseof
modemincompatibilitiesorlinenoise.Tryconnecting ata
lowerspeed.
TheModemDisconnectsWhileOnline
● IfyouhaveCallWaitingonthesamephonelineasyourmodem,itcaninterruptyourconnectionwhen
someonetriestocallyou.IfyouhaveCallWaiting,disableitbeforeeachcall.Inmosttelephoneareasin
NorthAmerica,youcandisableCallWaitingbyprecedingthetelephonenumber
with*70(checkwithyour
localtelephonecompany).
● YoucanautomaticallydisableCallWaitingbyincludingthedisablingcodeinthemodem’sdialprefix(e.g.,
ATDT*70,—notethecomma,whichinsertsapausebeforethenumberisdiale d).Tochange thedialprefixin
Windows98HyperTerminal,selectCallfromtheCallmenu,clickDialingProperties,checkThislocation
has
CallWaiting,andselectthecorrectcodeforyourphoneservice.
● Ifyouhaveextensionphonesonthesamelineasyourmodem,youorsomeoneelsecaninterruptthe
connectionbypickingupanotherphone.Ifthisisafrequentproblem,disconnecttheextensionphones
beforeusingthemodem,orinstallanotherphonelineespeciallyforthemodem.
● Checkforlooseconnectionsbetweenthemodemandthecomputerandthetelephonejack.
● Youmighthavehadapoorconnectionbecauseoflineconditionsortheproblemmighthaveoriginated on
theotherendoftheline.Tryagain.
● Ifyouwereonlinewithanonlineservice,itmighthavehunguponyoubecauseoflackofactivityonyourpart
orbecauseyouexceededyourtimelimitfortheday.Tryagain.
