MonitoringyourHeartRateisoneofthebestprocedurestocontrol
theintensityofyourexercise.
ContactHeartRate(CHR)sensorsareinstalledtosendyourheart
ratesignalstotheConsole.TheConsolecanalsoreadtelemetry
HRsignalsfromaHeartRateChestStrapTransmitter.TheConsole
showsyourHeartRateinBeatsPerMinute(BPM).
Ifyouhaveapacemakerorotherimplantedelectronic
device,consultyourdoctorbeforeusingawirelesschest
straporothertelemetricheartratemonitor.
ContactHeartRateSensors
ContactHeartRate(CHR)sensorssendyourheartratesignalstotheConsole.TheCHRsensorsarethestainlesssteelpartsofthe
Handlebars.Touse,putyourhandscomfortablyaroundthesensors.Besurethatyourhandstouchboththetopandthebottomof
thesensors.Holdfirm,butnottootightorloose.BothhandsmustmakecontactwiththesensorsfortheConsoletodetectapulse.
AftertheConsoledetectsfourstablepulsesignals,yourinitialpulseratewillbeshown.
OncetheConsolehasyourinitialheartrate,donotmoveorshiftyourhandsfor10to15seconds.TheConsolewillnowvalidatethe
heartrate.Manyfactorsinfluencetheabilityofthesensorstodetectyourheartratesignal:
Movementoftheupperbodymuscles(includingarms)producesanelectricalsignal(muscleartifact)thatcaninterferewith
pulsedetection.Slighthandmovementwhileincontactwiththesensorscanalsoproduceinterference.
Callusesandhandlotionmayactasaninsulatinglayertoreducethesignalstrength.
SomeElectrocardiogram(EKG)signalsgeneratedbyindividualsarenotstrongenoughtobedetectedbythesensors.
CHRdetectionmaybelimitedtowalkingorslowjoggingduetotheextrememuscleartifactsandhandmotiongeneratedbya
comfortablerunningstyle.Ifyourheartratesignaleverseemserraticaftervalidation,wipeoffyourhandsandthesensors
andtryagain.
HeartRateCalculations
Yourmaximumheartrateusuallydecreasesfrom220BeatsPerMinute(BPM)inchildhoodtoapproximately160BPMbyage60.
Thisfallinheartrateisusuallylinear,decreasingbyapproximatelyoneBPMforeachyear.Thereisnoindicationthattraining
influencesthedecreaseinmaximumheartrate.Individualsofthesameagecouldhavedifferentmaximumheartrates.Itismore
accuratetofindthisvaluebygettingastresstestthanbyusinganagerelatedformula.
Youratrestheartrateisinfluencedbyendurancetraining.Thetypicaladulthasanatrestheartrateofapproximately72BPM,
whereashighlytrainedrunnersmayhavereadingsof40BPMorlower.
TheHeartRatetableisanestimateofwhatHeartRateZone(HRZ)iseffectivetoburnfatandbetteryourcardiovascularsystem.
Physicalconditionsvary,thereforeyourindividualHRZcouldbeseveralbeatshigherorlowerthanwhatisshown.
Themostefficientproceduretoburnfatduringexerciseistostartataslowpaceandgraduallyincreaseyourintensityuntilyour
heartratereachesbetween6085%ofyourmaximumheartrate.Continueatthatpace,keepingyourheartrateinthattargetzone
forover20minutes.Thelongeryoumaintainyourtargetheartrate,themorefatyourbodywillburn.

targetratemaybehigherorlower.Consultyourphysicianforyourindividualtargetheartratezone.
