[AF ASSIST LAMP] to [OFF]. In this case,
it will become more difficult to focus on the
subject.
• In auto mode [ ], the [AF ASSIST
LAMP] setting is fixed to [ON].
• A vignetting effect may appear on the
circumference of the AF assist lamp
because the AF assist lamp may be
obscured by the lens, however, this does
not cause a problem with the performance
of the camera.
• The setting for the [AF ASSIST LAMP] is
fixed to [OFF] in [SCENERY] (P65),
[NIGHT SCENERY] (P66) [PANNING]
(P66) and [FIREWORKS] (P68) in scene
mode.
Press [ ] to display the [REC] mode
menu and select the item to set. (P82)
This is a technique for setting the focus and
the exposure in advance when the subject
is outside the focus area or when the
contrast is too sharp and the appropriate
exposure cannot be achieved.
∫ When [FOCUS] is selected
(Fixing the focus only)
1 Aim the AF area at the subject.
2 Press [FOCUS/AE LOCK] to fix
the focus.
• Press [FOCUS/AE LOCK] button again
to cancel it.
• The focus lock indication [ ] lights
when the subject is focused.
3 Move the camera to compose the
picture and then press the shutter
fully.
∫ When [AE] is selected
(Fixing the exposure only)
1 Aim the AF area at the subject.
2 Press [FOCUS/AE LOCK] to fix
the exposure.
• Press [FOCUS/AE LOCK] again to
cancel it.
• The AE lock indication [ ], the
aperture value and the shutter speed
appear when the exposure is set.
3 Move the camera to compose the
picture and then press the shutter
fully.

1 Aim the AF area at the subject.
2 Press [FOCUS/AE LOCK] to fix
the focus and the exposure.
• Press [FOCUS/AE LOCK] button again
to cancel.
• When the subject is focused and the
exposure is set, the focus/AE lock
indication [ ], the aperture value and
the shutter speed appear.
3 Move the camera to compose the
picture and then press the shutter
fully.
∫ When in manual focus (MF)
After focusing at the position where you
want to record the subject, press the
[FOCUS/AE LOCK] button to fix the focus.
