Martin Fowler’s book Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture covers many of the design pat-

The OpenACS (http://www.openacs.org) project is the community-driven development of the previ-
ous generation Web Application Framework architecture written in the TCL programming language.
Many of the design concepts that appear in Red Hat WAF had precursors in the ACS TCL and Ope-
nACS world. In particular:
• http://openacs.org/doc/openacs-4-6-3/object-system-design.html is the design document that cov-
ers the basic object model that was the ancestor of the WAF object model.
• http://openacs.org/doc/openacs-4-6-3/groups-design.html discusses the basic groups model that
was the ancestor of the current WAF group model.
The Java programming language provides extensive support for globalization:
• The java.text Java package (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/java/text/package-
summary.html). This class contains most of Sun’s globalization
classes.
• The java.util.Locale class is Sun’s representation of a Locale, and can be found at
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/api/java/util/Locale.html.
• The java.util.ResourceBundle class and its subclasses help
maintain and retrieve externalized localized resources. It can be found at

related standards.
