PREPARATIONWITHRESTOREDECKSTRIPPER
Step1–RemoveexistingStain/Sealer:
Previouslyappliedcoatingsneedtoberemovedfortwoveryimportantreasons;firststainsdonot
adherewelltooneanotherandsecondtheoldfinishwillblockthenewfinishfrompenetratingthe
wood.Iftheoldstainorsealantispeeling,it willpullyournewcoatingupaswell.Thenewtopcoatwill
notlockdownandsealtheoldtopcoat.Evenifyouhavenotrecoatedyourdeckinmanyyearsandit
lookslikethereisnostainorsealantleftonthedeck,youmustcompletethisstep.Previouslyapplied
stainsandsealantsmaybepresentonthedeckandarenotalwaysvisibleandtheywillpreventthenew
topcoatfromproperlyadheringtothewood.
StripthesurfaceusingadeckbrushandtheRestoreDeckStripper.Applythedeckstrippertothedeck
andscrubitintothewoodwithadeckbrush.Letitsitfor15minutes,thenpowerwashitoff
completely.FollowalloftheinstructiononthebackoftheRestoreDeckStripperlabelbefore
proceeding.Nextsandtheentiredeckusing50or60gritsandpaper.Thiswillopentheporesofthe
woodandcreateatexturedsurfacethatiseasierforthecoatingtoadhereto.
Step2–Clean:
CleanthesurfaceusingadeckbrushandtheRestoreDeck&ConcreteCleaner.Thesurfacemustbe
completelycleanandfreeofdirt,grease,mildewandorganicgrowthtoensureproductbondingand
adhesion.Forbestresultsuseapressurewasher,inadditiontotheRestoreDeck&ConcreteCleaner,to
removeembeddeddirtandgrime.(Useatalowsetting500‐1200PSI.Donotusehighpressureasit
mayharmthewood.)Formildewandotherorgani cgrowthuseadilutedsolutionofhouseholdbleach
(3partswaterto1partbleach)appliedtothesurfacebeforecleaning.Loosepaintneedstobescraped
andremovedfromthesurface.
Step3–TestSurfaceforApplication:
AFTERCLEANINGTHESURFACEYOUMUSTCONDUCTASPLASHTESTTOASSURETHEOLDCOATINGIS
FULLYREMOVEDFORPROPERADHESIONOFTHENEWTOPCOAT.PREVIOUSLYAPPLIEDSEALERSmay
bepresentonthedeckandarenotalwaysvisible.Conductasplashtestbysprinklingwateronmultiple
areasofthesurface.Checkatleast4areas,ormoreforlargerareas.Besuretocheckbothhightraffic
areassuchaswalkwaysandnon‐trafficareas.Ifthewaterabsorbsrapidlyintothesurface,thesurfaceis
readytobecoated.Ifthewaterbeads,puddlesorisnotabsorbed,thesurfaceissealedandnotready
tocoat.Ifanypartofthesurfaceisnotabsorbingthewater,usetheRestoreDeckStripperandSand
using50or60gritsandpaperagaininthatsection.CleanagainwithabrushandRestoreDeck&
