Instructions on how to use the memory card Be sure to format the memory card (see p.68) if you are using a newly purchased memory card for the first time, if it contains data that the camera cannot recognize, or if it contains images captured with a different camera. Turn off the camera power whenever the memory card is being inserted or removed. Repeated use of the memory card will eventually reduce the memory card’s performance. Should this be the case, you will need to purchase a new memory card.

Things to Watch Out for When Taking Pictures Pressing the shutter button down half way. Lightly press the shutter button to confirm focus and flash battery charge. Press the shutter button all way down to take the picture. When shooting a low lighting conditions, the camera shake warning indicator ( Ã ) may appear on the LCD monitor.
Focus lock Using the camera buttons to set the camera To focus on a subject not positioned in the center of the picture, use the focus lock function. The recording mode function can be set up by using the camera buttons. Using the Focus Lock 1. Ensure the subject is in the center of the autofocus frame. 2. Press the shutter button halfway. When the green auto focus frame lights up, it means the camera is focused on the subject.
SHUTTER button Zoom W/T Lever Used for taking an image or recording voice in the Recording mode. If the menu is not displayed, this lever works as the OPTICAL ZOOM or DIGITAL ZOOM lever. This camera has a 26X optical zoom and a 5X digital zoom function. Using both will offer a total zoom ratio of 130X. In Movie clip mode Pressing the shutter button down fully starts the process for recording a movie clip.
Zoom W/T Lever WIDE Zoom Optical zoom WIDE : Move the Zoom W/T lever to the left in optical zoom mode to see subjects in the distance. Continue to move the Zoom W/T lever to the left to disable optical zoom. If the Zoom W/T lever is fully turned, the zoom adjusts quickly. If the Zoom W/T lever is turned a little, the zoom adjusts slowly. Images taken using the digital zoom may take a little longer for the camera to process. Allow time for this to take place.
Diopter adjustment lever Flash pop-up button When the electronic viewfinder is out of focus, the user can achieve the clearest focus by turning the diopter adjustment lever. (p.36) When a background is brighter than a subject, or when intentionally turning on the flash, e.g. backlight shooting or shooting in poor lighting conditions, the user must pop up the flash by pressing the flash pop-up button. See page 41 to set the desired flash mode for a shooting situation when using the flash.
Exposure compensation button EVF/LCD button This camera adjusts the appropriate amount of exposure automatically for a shooting situation. The user can use the exposure compensation button to shoot with excessive exposure (bright images) or insufficient exposure (dark images). The range of exposure compensation is -2 to +2 (EV), and can be set with intervals of 1/3 EV. The user can shoot with the electronic viewfinder when it is difficult for the user to see the LCD display due to bright lighting.
EVF/LCD button MENU button Using the electronic viewfinder (EVF) The electronic viewfinder shows the same display as the LCD monitor, and is used when it is difficult for the user to see the LCD monitor due to bright lighting. Pressing the EVF/LCD button will switch between the electronic viewfinder and the LCD monitor. The display remains the same when the camera is turned off or when the user selects another mode with the Mode Dial.
OK/AF point button ( ) Info (DISP) / Up button When the menu is displayed on the LCD monitor, this button is used for shifting the cursor to the sub menu or for confirming data. This button is used when moving to or saving the changed data on the menu screen. Press the UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT buttons to shift the AF points.
Info (DISP) / Up button Histogram/Grid Window ( Macro ( While the menu is showing, the DOWN button operates as a direction button. You can select the most appropriate white balance setting for a given shooting environment by setting up the custom white balance. 1. Shooting ( ) Face Detection If you use face detection options, your camera can detect a human face. When focusing on a human face, the brightness of the face is also adjusted. You can also capture natural facial expressions by using self portrait. Face Detection Back Move Ä Selectable modes: Program, Aperture. Shutter Priority, Manual, Beauty Shot, Portrait, Children, Beach & Snow Normal This mode detects the face position of the subject automatically and then sets the focus and exposure.
Shooting ( ) Self Portrait Smile Shot When taking pictures of yourself, the area of your face is automatically detected so that you can take self pictures more easily and quickly. The camera automatically takes a picture by detecting the face of the subject although you don’t press the shutter button. If you press the Shutter button, the picture is taken in the normal way.
Shooting ( ) Smart Face Recognition The camera automatically registers faces that you frequently photograph. This feature will automatically prioritize the focus on those faces and favorite faces. This feature is available only when you use a memory card. The same person can be recognized as a different person and vice versa depending on glasses, brightness, extreme change of pose or facial expressions.
Shooting ( ) You can register up to 8 favorite faces. The flash option will be set to Off. If you register the same face twice, you can delete one of the faces in the face list. Smart FR Edit You can register frequently shot faces or edit the registered face list prior to shooting. This feature is available only when you use a memory card. Shooting ( ) Metering Drive mode If you cannot obtain suitable exposure conditions, you can change the metering method to take brighter pictures. However, the calculation will be biased towards the center of the Back Move image area. This is suitable for general use.
Shooting ( ) High resolution and picture quality increases file saving time, which increases stand-by time. If the [Continuous], [High-speed], [Motion Capture], [AEB] sub menu is selected, the flash will be off automatically. If less than 3 pictures are available in the memory, the AEB shooting is not available. It is best to use a tripod for the AEB shooting as the time to save each image file is longer and blurring caused by camera shake may occur.
Shooting ( ) Press the OK button once again to change the location of the focus frame and the focus frame will appear again. Ä Even if you turn off the power and turn on it again, the previous setting will be maintained. Ä [Selection AF] is not available when operating the [Face Detection] function. Ŷ Things to watch out for using the DUAL IS mode – The digital zoom will not operate in the DUAL IS mode. – If the lighting conditions are brighter than fluorescent lighting conditions, the DUAL IS will not activate.
