Potential health effects
General
Acute
:
Carbaryl: Exposure may cause convulsions. nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Carbaryl is an N-methyl carbamate that
inhibits cholinesterase.
Inhalation
Acute
:
Harmful if inhaled. Acute Silicosis can occur with exposures to very high concentrations of respirable crystalline silica
over a very short time period, sometimes as short as a few months. The symptoms of acute silicosis include
progressive shortness of breath, fever, cough and weight loss. This product causes reversible cholinesterase
inhibition without long term effects. Repeated overexposure may cause more severe cholinesterase inhibition with
more pronounced symptoms. May lead to rapid onset of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, involuntary
shaking, excess salivation, pinpoint pupils, blurred vision, profuse sweating, temporary paralysis, respiratory
depression, and convulsions.
Chronic
:
Repeated and prolonged exposure to crystalline silica containing materials may cause irritation and/or lung damage
silicosis, fibrosis, inflammation, cancer.
Skin
Acute
:
Exposure to dust may cause mechanical irritation.
Eye
Acute
:
May cause mild eye irritation.
Ingestion
Acute
:
Harmful if swallowed. This product causes reversible cholinesterase inhibition without long term effects. Repeated
overexposure may cause more severe cholinesterase inhibition with more pronounced symptoms. May lead to rapid
onset of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, involuntary shaking, excess salivation, pinpoint pupils, blurred
vision, profuse sweating, temporary paralysis, respiratory depression, and convulsions.
Mutagenicity
:
Carbaryl was not mutagenic or genotoxic based on the overall weight of evidence in a battery of in vitro and in vivo
tests.
Carcinogenicity
:
Crystalline silica (quartz) inhaled from occupational sources is classified as carcinogenic to humans. Titanium dioxide
is classified as a possible carcinogen Group 2B by IARC.
Reproductive Effects
:
Carbaryl did not cause developmental or reproductive toxicity in lab tests.
