Appendix A-2 Glossary of terms
MENU – the selection of main menus will be shown in the upper part of the
screen. Leaf through the menus by means of the cursor key and the [ENT]
key, or use the numerical keys to activate one of the menus.
NMEA – National Marine Electronics Association. The NMEA is an organi-
zation of manufacturers of marine electronics equipment. They have adopted
the NMEA0183 as a standard for communications between various types of
marine electronic equipment.
Position update - if, for some reason, there is no position update from GPS or
external sensor, the displayed position will start to flash. Once normal position
updated is resumed, the flashing will stop.
TFT – Thin-Film Transistor (Active matrix) display.
Transducer – the transducer serves as the acoustic “loudspeaker” and “micro-
phone” to send and receive the signals through the water. They are most
often made from ceramic elements carefully built into a robust housing. The
ceramic elements change shape when a voltage is applied across them (when
the EQXX transmits a signal), and they also generate a voltage when they
encounter sound waves (as when the EQXX is receiving an echo).
XTE - Cross-Track-Error (-Distance), measured magnitude of the position
error perpendicular to the intended track line.
