Replacing the Trailing Shield
WARNING
Always remove the battery packs when servicing or transporting the
mower.
WARNING
Never operate the mower unless the trailing shield is in place and
working. Never operate the mower with damaged safety devices.
Failure to do so can result in personal injury.
The trailing shield is subject to wear and damage, which could expose moving parts or allow
objects to be thrown. For safety protection, frequently check the trailing shield and replace it
immediately with only the identical replacement part. Contact SKIL service center for support.
To remove a damaged trailing shield
(Fig. 22a)
a. Turn the lawn mower upside down.
b. Remove the circlips (retaining rings) from two
ends of the shaft by using a pair of needle
nose pliers (not included). Keep the circlips
and the shaft for reassembly.
c. Slide the shaft towards one end so that the
other end of the shaft can be removed from
the housing.
d. Pull the damaged trailing shield out.
To install a new trailing shield
a
. Thread the shaft into corresponding opening
on the new trailing shield.
b. Adjust the position of the shaft in relation to
the trailing shield. Ensure a fraction of an
inch of leading end of the shaft is beyond the
end of the opening in the trailing shield.
c. Hold the shaft and the trailing shield
assembly, thread the leading end of the shaft
into an opening on the housing. Continue to
push the shaft so that it goes deeper until the
other end of the shaft can be inserted into
the other opening on the housing.
CAUTION
Ensure that the trailing
shield is positioned as
shown in Fig. 22b – the trailing shield should
not come in contact with the rear left wheel!
d. Center the shaft so that the equal lengths
protrude on both ends.
e. Reinstall the circlips onto both ends. Ensure that both circlips are properly seated into their
respective grooves.
