Notes on the AC Adaptor Table of Contents Use the nearby wall outlet (wall socket) when using the AC Adaptor. Disconnect the AC Adaptor from the wall outlet (wall socket) immediately if any malfunction occurs while using your camcorder. Do not use the AC Adaptor placed in a narrow space, such as between a wall and furniture. Do not short-circuit the DC plug of the AC Adaptor or battery terminal with any metallic objects. This may cause a malfunction.
Step 2: Turning the power on, and setting the date and time Your camcorder is turned on. To turn on your camcorder when the LCD screen is open, press POWER. Table of Contents It will take several seconds until you can start recording after you turn on the camcorder. You cannot operate your camcorder during this time. If you close the LCD screen while recording movies, the camcorder stops recording. If the ACCESS/access lamp is lit or flashing after recording is finished, it means that data is still being written onto the recording media. Do not apply shock or vibration to your camcorder, and do not remove the battery or AC Adaptor.

Useful functions for recording movies and photos You can magnify images up to 12 times the original size with the power zoom lever or the zoom buttons on the LCD frame. If you move your finger off the power zoom lever, the operation sound of the power zoom lever may also be recorded.
Notes If you play back 5.1ch sound on your camcorder, 5.1ch sound is automatically converted and output in 2ch. To enjoy the 5.1ch surround sound of the movies recorded with high definition image quality (HD) in 5.1ch sound, you need an AVCHD format device compatible with 5.1ch surround. When you connect your camcorder with an HDMI cable (sold separately), the sound of high definition image quality (HD) movies recorded in 5.1ch sound is automatically output in 5.1ch sound.
HDR-XR500VE/XR520VE When you want to record images in dim light, set the STD/LOW LUX/NIGHTSHOT switch to LOW LUX. appears, and images will be recorded brighter than if you do not use LOW LUX. When you set the STD/LOW LUX/NIGHTSHOT switch to NIGHTSHOT, appears, and you can record images even in total darkness. Set the STD/LOW LUX/NIGHTSHOT switch to STD when recording in normal ambient light. Notes The NightShot function uses infrared light.
Recording fast action in slow-motion (SMTH SLW REC) Fast moving subjects and actions, which cannot be captured under the ordinary shooting conditions, can be shot in smooth moving slow-motion for about 3 seconds. This is useful to shoot fast actions such as a golf or tennis swing. (HOME) (CAMERA) [SMTH SLW REC]. Table of Contents Touch Press START/STOP. Switching the screen display, or turning the LCD backlight on/off Table of Contents You can switch the screen display when you press DISP while the power is set to on. appears. To turn off the LCD backlight, press and hold DISP down for a few seconds until This setting is practical when you use your camcorder in bright conditions or you want to save battery power. Difficult Your camcorder cannot find a GPS signal, therefore, it cannot triangulate. Use your camcorder in an open area. Processing Your camcorder is confirming the GPS signal, and will be able to acquire location information soon. Wait until your camcorder completes the triangulation.

To change music files You can transfer music files from audio CDs or MP3 files to your camcorder, and play them with Highlight Playback. To transfer music files, you need to install the software from the supplied CD-ROM on your computer. Turn on your camcorder and computer, connect them with the supplied USB cable, then touch [DOWNLOAD MUSIC] on the camcorder screen. (If the [USB CONNECT] screen does not (HOME) (OTHERS) [USB CONNECT]). For details, see the “PMB Guide.

Connecting to a high definition TV High definition image quality (HD) movies are played back with high definition image quality (HD). The (OPTION) button is not displayed. The OPTION MENU cannot be used during Easy Handycam operation. Batteries/power sources The power abruptly turns off. Your camcorder may become warm during operation. This is not a malfunction. Set [REMOTE CTRL] to [ON] (p. 99). Insert a battery into the battery holder with the +/– polarities correctly matching the +/– marks (p. 9). Remove any obstructions between the Wireless Remote Commander and the remote sensor.
problem persists, replace the battery pack with a new one (p. 130). The indicated time may not be correct depending on the environment of use. “Memory Stick PRO Duo” media Operations using the “Memory Stick PRO Duo” media cannot be performed. The temperature of your camcorder is extremely low. Turn off your camcorder and take it to a warm place. Leave the camcorder there for a while, then turn on the camcorder. The camcorder stops operating. You cannot record photos together with: [SMTH SLW REC] [FADER] The ACCESS/access lamp remains lit or flashing even if recording was stopped. There is a time difference between the point when START/STOP is pressed and the point that the recording movie is started or stopped actually.
Playback The subjects passing by the screen very fast appear crooked. This is called the focal plane phenomenon. This is not a malfunction. Because of the way the image device (CMOS sensor) reads out image signals, the subjects passing by the lens rapidly might appear crooked depending on the recording conditions. Images cannot be played back. The color of the image is not correctly displayed. Set the STD/LOW LUX/NIGHTSHOT switch to STD (p. 35). Photos cannot be played back.
Sounds cannot be recorded while shooting an about-3-second movie using [SMTH SLW REC]. Editing movies/photos on your camcorder Left and right sound will be heard unbalanced when playing back movies on computers or other devices. This happens when sound recorded in 5.1ch surround is converted to 2ch (normal stereo sound) by a computer or other device. This is not a malfunction. Change the sound conversion type (downmix type) when playing back on 2ch stereo devices.
GPS The top, bottom, right, and left edges of images are trimmed slightly on a connected TV. The current location on the map of the camcorder is different from the actual current location (HDR-XR500VE/XR520VE). The image appears distorted on the 4:3 TV. The margin of error of the radio signal from GPS satellites is large. The margin of error can be as wide as several-hundred meters at the maximum.
