2.0 Fan Sealing
RL Series fans are factory sealed, no additional caulk or other materials are required to inhibit air leakage.
3.0 Ducting
Use only metal ducting for fans used in kitchen areas or as range hood or remote blowers. Any type of ducting is acceptable
forareasotherthankitchens,however,exiblenonmetallicductingisrecommendedforeasyinstallationandquieteroperation.
Insulatedexibleductingishighlyrecommendedincoldclimatestopreventthewarmbathroomairfromformingcondensationin
theductingwhereitisexposedtocolderatticair.
ToensurequietoperationofENERGYSTARqualiedin-lineandremotefans,eachfanshallbeinstalledusingsoundattenuation
techniquesappropriatefortheinstallation.Forbathroomandgeneralventilationapplications,atleast8feetofinsulatedexible
ductshallbeinstalledbetweentheexhaustorsupplygrille(s)andthefan.Forkitchenrangehoodremoteventilationapplications,
where metal duct is generally required by code, a metal sound attenuator shall be installed between the range hood and the fan.
The outlet of the fan should always be ducted to the outside. Avoid venting the outlet of the fan directly into an attic area. The
excessmoisturefromthebathroomcancausedamagetobuildingstructureandanyitemsstoredintheattic.Multipleventing
pointsmaybeconnectedtogetherusinga"T"or"Y"tting.Straightsmoothrunsofrigidmetalductingwillpresenttheleast
resistanceandmaximizesystemperformance.TheEquivalentLengthofRigidMetalDuctingresultingin.2”WCpressureloss
foreachFanModelisprovidedinthespecicationsectionoftheseInstructions.Flexibleducting,ifused,mustalwaysbeas
closetobeingfullyextendedaspossible.Formedrigidmetalductelbowswillpresenttheleastresistanceandmaximizesystem
performance,recommendedbendradiusofelbowisatleast1.5xductdiameter.
For quietest performance, the fan should be mounted further away from the inlet duct, near the outside vent. A minimum distance
of8feetisrecommendedbetweenthefanorT/Yofamulti-intakesystemandintakegrille(s).
4.0 Back Draft Dampers
Backdraftdampersallowairowinonlyonedirectionpreventingcold/hotdraftsfromenteringthevented
areaandminimizepossiblecondensationandicingwithinthesystemwhilethefanisnotoperating.Back
draft dampers are highly recommended at each intake grille for bathroom ventilation in all cold climate
installations.
5.0 Electrical Wiring
AllwiringmustbeperformedinaccordancewiththeNationalFireProtectionAssociation’s(NFPA)”NationalElectricalCode,
Standard#70”-currenteditionforallcommercialandindustrialwork,andstateandlocalbuildingcodes.Allwiringmustbe
performedbyaqualiedandlicensedelectrician.AGroundFaultInterrupter(GFI)circuitisnotrequiredinmostinstallations,
checkyourlocalcodes.Ensurethatallexteriorelectricalboxesareoutdoorratedandproperlysealedtopreventwaterpenetration
intothebox.Ameans,suchasaweephole,isrecommendedtodrainthebox.
6.0 Applications
Suitableforgeneralventilation,bathroomventing,freshairsupply,ductboosting,buildingpressurization,etc.Suitablefor
kitchenexhaustventing.
7.0 Installation
Step 1:Attachthemountingbrackettothefanunitwith(2)#10x½”screws,provided.Avoidover
tightening screws.
Step 2:Selectlocationforfanmounting.Alocation2/3alongtheducting,aminimumof10feetaway
fromtheinletventtothefanortheY/Tofamulti-intakesystemwillprovidethequietestoperation.Fan
should be mounted vertically to prevent moisture from accumulating in the fan housing. Attach bracket to
mountingstructurewiththe11/4”screwsprovided.Ensurethefanissecurelyfastened.
Step 3:Connectductworkbetweenfaninletandareatobeventedthroughinletgrille.Flexible,nonmetallicductingis
recommendedforquietestoperationandeasiestinstallation.Insulatedexibleductingishighly recommended for bathroom
ventilation in all cold climate installations.
