16 Checking the Controls
or unauthorized use, switch off the motor, ensure the cutting
blades have stopped and remove the battery before
transporting or putting the garden shears down.
To switch the garden shears off:
► Release the trigger switch.
Once the trigger switch and retaining latch have been
released, the retaining latch will return to its locked
position and activation of the trigger switch will be
blocked.
The cutting blades will continue to move for a short time after
the trigger switch is released. Take care to avoid contact
after releasing the trigger switch and when setting down the
garden shears.
16.1 Testing the Controls
Before starting work, confirm that the retaining latch (1) and
trigger switch (2) are undamaged and functioning properly:

WARNING
To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injuries, keep hands,
feet and other parts of the body away from the cutting
blades. Do not touch the cutting blades while the battery is
inserted. Never touch moving cutting blades with your hand
or any part of your body, @ 6.6.2. Keep bystanders out of
the area while testing the controls.
To test the retaining latch and trigger switch:
► Remove the battery.
► Unlock the retaining latch by pushing it forward with your
thumb.
► Hold the retaining latch in the unlocked position.
► Depress the trigger switch momentarily.
► Release the retaining latch and trigger switch.
The retaining latch and trigger switch should return to their
respective locked positions. If they do not, take the garden
shears to an authorized STIHL servicing dealer to be
repaired before use.
If you can depress the trigger switch without first unlocking
the retaining latch take the garden shears to an authorized
STIHL servicing dealer to be repaired before use.
17.1 Cutting Shrubs
WARNING
To avoid serious or fatal injury, avoid contact with the
moving cutting blades. Never hold the material to be cut or
attempt to remove cut material without first releasing the
trigger switch and removing the battery. Release the trigger
switch and remove the battery before clearing jammed
material, @ 6.6.4.
WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury, never work with the
garden shears in the rain or in wet or damp conditions,
@ 6.5. Always wear proper clothing and protective apparel,
including proper eye protection, @ 6.4. Work carefully and
maintain proper control of the garden shears, @ 6.6.2.
The garden shears are designed for one-handed operation.
► Mount the shrub blades, @ 13.1.
