Hand/Arm Vibration CAUTION Long-term exposure to vibration while operating the machine may cause some numbness in the hands and wrists. Measured vibration level for right hand = 3.0 m/s2 Measured vibration level for left hand = 5.7 m/s2 Uncertainty Value (K) = 2.3 m/s2 Wear gloves that dampen the vibration whenever you operate the machine for an extended period of time. Note: The pins will not show through the holes in the handle ends when the handle is in the folded position. 2 3. Unfold the handle to the operating position by rotating it rearward (Figure 5). Installing the Recoil-Starter Rope in the Rope Guide No Parts Required Procedure Important: You must install the recoil-starter rope in the rope guide. Filling the Fuel Tank Operation • For best results, use only clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline Before Operation with an octane rating of 87 or higher ((R+M)/2 rating method). • Oxygenated fuel with up to 10% ethanol or 15% MTBE Before Operation Safety by volume is acceptable. • Do not use ethanol blends of gasoline, such as E15 General Safety or E85, with more than 10% ethanol by volume. Performance problems and/or engine damage may result, which may not be covered under warranty.

5. Tighten the handle knobs as tight as you can. Adjusting the Cutting Height WARNING Adjusting the cutting height may bring you into contact with the moving blade, causing serious injury. • Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop. • Do not put your fingers under the housing when adjusting the cutting height. Note: The cutting-height settings are 25 mm (1 inch); 35 mm (1-3/8 inches); 44 mm (1-3/4 inches); 54 mm (2-1/8 inches); 64 mm (2-1/2 inches); 73 mm (2-7/8 inches); 83 mm (3-1/4 inches); 92 mm (3-5/8 inches); and 102 mm (4 inches). • Do not mow on excessively steep slopes. Note: When you pull the recoil-start handle, pull it lightly until you feel resistance, then pull it sharply (Figure 19). Allow the rope to return to the handle slowly. To stop the engine, release the blade-control bar. Note: Remove the key from the ignition when you leave the machine (electric-start model only). Important: When you release the blade-control bar, both the engine and blade should stop within 3 seconds.

Side-Discharging the Clippings 3. Lower the rear deflector. Removing the Grass Bag Use the side discharge for cutting very tall grass. To remove the bag, reverse the steps in Installing the Grass Bag (page 11). If the grass bag is on the machine and the bag-on-demand lever is in the Bagging position, move the lever to the Recycling position; refer to Operating the Bag-on-Demand Lever (page 12).

After Operation • Avoid striking solid objects with the blade. Never deliberately mow over any object. • If the machine strikes an object or starts to vibrate, After Operating Safety immediately stop the engine, disconnect the wire from the spark plug, and examine the machine for damage. Important: Before tipping the machine to change the oil or replace the blade, allow the fuel tank to run dry through normal usage. Charging the Battery Service Interval: Every 25 hours Electric-start model only Charge the battery for 24 hours initially, then monthly (every 25 starts) or as needed. Always use the charger in a sheltered area and charge the battery at room temperature (70° or 22° C) whenever possible. 1. Replacing the Fuse Note: Your machine comes with a spare fuse in the battery compartment. Electric-start model only 5. Install the battery compartment with the screw that you removed in step 3. If the battery does not charge or the engine does not run with the electric starter, the fuse may be blown. Replace it with a 40-amp plug-in type fuse. 1. Raise the rear deflector and locate the battery compartment (Figure 34). 6. Install the cover over the battery compartment. 7. Lower the rear deflector.

Adjusting the Self-Propel Drive Whenever you install a new self-propel cable or if the self-propel drive is out of adjustment, adjust the self-propel drive. 1. Turn the adjustment knob counterclockwise to loosen the cable adjustment (Figure 38). Figure 37 Figure 38 Important: Position the curved ends of the blade to point toward the machine housing. 6. Storage 4. Install the spark plug and tighten it with a torque wrench to 15 ft-lb (20 N-m). Store the machine in a cool, clean, dry place. 5. Perform any needed maintenance procedures; refer to Maintenance (page 15). Preparing the Machine for Storage 6. Check the engine oil level; refer to Checking the Engine-Oil Level (page 8). 7. Fuel the fuel tank with fresh gasoline; refer to Filling the Fuel Tank (page 8). WARNING 8. Connect the wire to the spark plug. Gasoline vapors can explode.
