For energy harvesting and
power line backup applications,
the Vishay BCcomponents 196
HVC ENYCAP™ series of hybrid
ENergY storage capacitors
features industry-high energy
density of 13 Ws/g and low
2.5 mm profiles.
Finding more product details on the Vishay website, Matt realized the 196 HVC could solve all his design requirements. The 196 HVC
was small and flat and capable of a high number of recharge cycles. Moreover, the device delivered the high energy density, high
current handling, and relatively stable working voltage the CPAP design needed. Particularly important for a medical grade end
product, there were no hazardous chemicals in the hybrid capacitor’s material composition and no risk of incineration. The next day,
Matt ordered device samples and a reference board from Vishay. After several weeks of testing that proved the 196 HVC’s capabilities,
the ENYCAP™ device was designed into the new CPAP machine—which went on to become a great success on the market.
The 196 HVC’s Story
Vishay Intertechnology’s 196 HVC series
of hybrid energy storage capacitors was
created to give designers an energy storage
solution that overcomes the limitations of
rechargeable batteries on the one hand, and
supercapacitors on the other. The 196 HVC
devices, part of the ENYCAP™ family, fea-
ture low 2.5 mm profiles, low self-discharge,
and industry-high energy density of 13
Ws/g. Offering designers exceptional flexibil-
ity and enhanced charge and discharge
performance for energy harvesting and
power line backup applications, the Vishay
BCcomponents 196 HVC ENYCAP™ series
is available with a wide variety of layouts,
capacitance values, and voltage ratings.
CPAP machines with a power-outage alarm
are just one of many types of devices that
need a temporary energy supply when the
mains connection is no longer available. Rechargeable batteries can be used for
these systems, but their limited number of charge / discharge cycles could mean
that they wear out before the machine’s end of life. Double-layer
supercapacitors offer high power density and unlimited charge / discharge
cycles, but they require more volume to support a power requirement exceeding
100 mW for more than a few seconds. Vishay created the 196 HVC to give
designers the best of both worlds: combining the advantages of classic batteries
and dual-layer capacitors without their limitations.
The 196 HVC series offers up to six cells and capacitance values from 4 F to
90 F, with stacked through-hole, surface-mount flat, and lay flat configurations
featuring pins, tabs, and connectors. Voltage ratings range from 1.4 V up to
8.4 V. Its unique technology does not require cell balancing and can provide
from 10 mA (4 F) up to 1 A (90 F) for more than two minutes.
For technical evaluation, Vishay provides a demo board with a complete 2 W, 3.3 V to 5 V power management solution, featuring the
LTC
®
3355* IC from Linear Technology, an integrated ENYCAP™ charger, and deep discharge protection.
