of sunlight and moisture. Even though they’re called “duct” tapes, 3M
Duct Tape and
Scotch

Specialty Tape products are a universal solution for a variety of jobs.
Choosing the right duct tape
When selecting a duct tape, consider factors such
as strength, weatherability, application temperature
and thickness. 3M
Duct Tape and Scotch® Specialty
Tape products are designed with the best combination
of these factors for specic applications and perform
best when used under correct conditions. Finding the
right combination of features for your job is simple
with easy-to-read packaging that indicates the relative
strength and weatherability of each tape.
Strength
Weatherability
Max Max
Strength
Strength is a combination of two factors: peel adhesion
(the “stickiness” of the tape) and tensile strength (the
“sturdiness” of the tape). Peel adhesion is the force
required to remove the tape; the higher the peel
adhesion, the stronger the bond between the tape
and the surface. Tensile strength is an indication of
how dicult it is to tear or break the tape. Overall,
greater strength means high holding power with
strong adhesion, resulting in repairs that last longer.
Weatherability
Weatherability is the degree to which the tape avoids
drying and cracking and holds up when exposed to
the sun, wind, moisture and extreme temperatures.
Application temperature
Application temperature aects the performance of
the adhesive. Ideal application temperature should
be between 50°F and 100°F.
Thickness
Thickness can also inuence tape performance,
although greater thickness does not necessarily mean
better tape strength. Thinner tapes are more exible
and conformable, which can lead to a tighter, longer-
lasting hold. The key to tape performance is the quality
of the components, not the quantity of ingredients.
Other brands may use additional ller material to
articially increase the loft of the tape. But with quality
components and superior technology, a thinner tape
can match or outperform a thicker tape.
