E ffect of Grade on Cut
G e n e r a l l y, factors which tend to produce a finer finish will
reduce the rate of stock removal. There is a differnce in total cut
between the finer and coarser grades. The coarser grades remove
more stock faster.
E f fect of Abrasive Belt on Buffability of S t e e l
The chart shows that a used, 150-grade belt produces a 25-
micro-inch finish on a given steel. (Micro-inch finish, as used
here, refers to the average scratch depth in millionths of a n
i n c h . )
A n e w, 220-grade belt also produces a 25-micro-inch finish on
the same steel. However, the coarser belt makes a wider scratch.
The result is more time required for the follow-up buff i n g
operation — 22 seconds versus only 12 seconds for the piece
finished with the finer grade.
