Digital Identification Tags versus Bar Codes
Bar codes on patron cards or library items may be read to provide item
identifier information to the library circulation system. Digital identification
tags also contain information about the type of media being processed. This
enables the workstation to inhibit security operations for magnetic materials.
Magnetic Materials
Recorded magnetic media, such as audio or video tapes, may be damaged
by security operations of the Digital Staff Workstation. The workstation is not
designed to secure or un-secure recorded magnetic media. The digital
identification tag information inhibits security actions for magnetic media.
Conversion Software
As an option, the workstation can also be used to convert bar-coded items to
digital identification technology.
A related product, the 3M
Digital Conversion Station, uses software that
converts bar-coded items to digital identification technology. The same
conversion software used in the Digital Conversion Station can be run and
used to convert items on the Digital Staff Workstation. Refer to Running
Conversion Software on the Digital Staff Workstation in the appendix of
this guide.
The conversion software programs identification information onto a 3M™
Digital Identification Tag. The touchscreen monitor shows where the Digital
ID tag should be applied to the book or other media.
