Process
As electronic devices find their way into more portable applications such as automotive engine control systems, notebook
computers, and personal telephones, greater demand is placed on the components and the circuit boards to survive in less
than ideal conditions. The vibration and impact to which electronic devices can be subjected can often damage delicate
leads and sever the electrical connection on components. 3M
VHB
double coated acrylic foam tapes have been used to
bond electronic components in printed circuit board assembly. 3M VHB’s ability to absorb and damp vibrational energy
has become increasingly important to the design engineer. There are a variety of potential applications for 3M VHB and
3M acrylic foam tapes in PCB assembly. Some application ideas include:
A. Bond and help stabilize large integrated circuits on the board.
B. Bond a smaller board subassembly to the larger board.
C. Attach a battery to the back of a component or directly to the board.
D. Cushion large electrolytic devices.
E. Attach a stiffening or mounting bracket to the board.

suitable for users method of application. Please remember that many factors can affect the use and
performance of a 3M ITSD product in a particular application. The materials to be bonded with the
product, the surface preparation of those materials, the product selected for use, the conditions in which
the product is used, and the time and environmental conditions in which the product is expected to perform
are among the many factors that can affect the use and performance of a 3M ITSD product. Given the
variety of factors that can affect the use and performance of a 3M ITSD product, some of which are
uniquely within the users knowledge and control, it is essential that the user evaluate the 3M ITSD product
to determine whether it is fit for a particular purpose and suitable for the users method of application.

Advantages
Die-cuttable acrylic foam construction provides excellent shock,
vibration, and solvent resistance. The flexibility of 3M VHB
tapes tolerate thermal expansion on many irregular surfaces.
This die-cuttable acrylic foam construction provides greater
thickness and flexibility of thinner 3M VHB tapes.
