Application Tips
3M
Ultra-pure Viscoelastic Damping Polymers are designed to be used in damping applications as part of a constrained
layer damper or damped laminate designs.
1. Surface Preparation - Use cleaning solvents like isopropyl alcohol or heptane to make sure the application surface is
dry and free of any wax, grease, dust, dirt, oil, scale or any other contaminants or loose or weakly attached surface finishes
or coatings. More aggressive solvents may be needed to remove contaminants.
2. Surface Type - The 3M ultra-pure viscoelastic damping polymer will form good bonds when properly applied to many
high surface energy materials. Materials with a surface energy below 100 dynes/cm
2
should be tested to determine if a
suitable development of an adequate bond for a given end use application will occur.
3. Application - The 3M ultra-pure viscoelastic damping polymer pplication depends on the polymer selected. See Data
Sheet for each polymer type.
Typically, the 242 or JPV polymers can be applied with pressure only. The 140 polymer will require heat and pressure to
achieve a good bond. All products should be applied in a manner where air entrapment is avoided..
