Input/Output Module overview
The Input/Output Module is used to load and unload samples to and from the laboratory
automation system. The areas in the drawers can be configured to customer-specific needs.
The following configurations are available for the module:
• Input and output combined
• Input only
• Output only
Two types of output areas are available:
• Error area for samples with errors (for example, bar code reader error)
• Areas for customer-specific sorting
In addition, areas of the drawers can be configured as a sample output or can be configured for
loading and unloading analyzer racks.
The following list provides the key features of the module:
• Processes a minimum of 900 capped samples per hour
• Allows module configuration for input and output combined, input only, or output only
• Allows customer-definable input areas
• Allows manual archiving

Input/Output Module design and function
Drawers are used to load and unload samples on the Input/Output Module (IOM).
FlexRacks in the RackPorts can be configured as input or output areas on a customer-specific
basis and hold the samples in an upright position.
The IOM processes standard sample tubes of different sizes, capped or uncapped, and reads
the sample IDs of the bar codes. The robot loads and unloads the CARs and FlexRacks with its
gripper. When the robot moves a sample, the system reads the bar code and transmits it to the
Track Sample Manager (TSM).
The exact location of the sample can be tracked on TSM.
For the input function, the robot removes the sample from the FlexRack and places it in a CAR.
For the output function, the robot removes the sample from a CAR and places it in the FlexRack.
