System security
Abbott Laboratories is committed to the security of the laboratory automation system (LAS) and
reducing cybersecurity risks associated with our medical devices.
Abbott Laboratories recognizes the importance of incorporating cybersecurity considerations
early and throughout our product design and development process. Our cybersecurity controls
were designed, developed, and implemented based on leading practices, regulatory guidance,
and government agencies.
Although we have designed the LAS with cybersecurity controls, our customers also play a vital
role in protecting information security:
Use of good laboratory practices and adherence to applicable regulations is recommended
at all times.
The system should be installed in a secure location, including workstations used to access
the Track Sample Manager (TSM) and Track Workflow Manager (TWM) user interfaces
remotely.
Only authorized users should have access to the system because the system may contain
protected health information (PHI) or sensitive data.
Although the LAS incorporates cybersecurity risk mitigation controls relating to network
connectivity, each system should be installed on a secure network that adheres to best
practices from a network security perspective to prevent unauthorized access to data
transmission between the LAS and external systems, such as a printer or host.
The LAS also incorporates cybersecurity risk mitigation controls relating to connecting
USB storage devices. Reports or other data exported to USB storage devices should be
controlled with appropriate laboratory practices.
When a customer-owned server for TSM or TWM is decommissioned or disposed, the
customer should remove all PHI or sensitive data from the server.
Operators should completely log off from the web user interface after each session by
closing the entire web browser.
