Coby Kyros 4 GB 7-Inch Tablet PC
Whatever the media says about tablet technology, it will not replace a PC just yet. The uses of a
tablet vary according to model and are significantly enhanced by its application capability. Once
you have checked out the features of a tablet, the rest is up to personal preference, and, to an
extent, physical design. Ultimately the selection of one tablet over another will also be
influenced by price, but the retail price quoted in this review is a guideline only as there are
countless offers and deals run by electronics companies and it always pays to keep an eye out for
discounts and bargains being advertised.
Usability
The Coby Kyros is more robust than many tablets that cost a great deal more, and the casing is
well finished. The buttons are very sensitive and backlit when touched, this is both a plus and a
minus. You need to be careful not to touch the power button accidentally when you put it away
or it will drain your battery! It needs a more robust cover than the black sleeve it is supplied
with. The battery, though non standard, charges well in an hour and you will get 5 hours use ,
surfing, watching videos and listening to music. Coby Kyros is efficient eReader, plus you can
view pages in portrait or landscape with automatic orientation detection. It is a solid tablet, but
not heavy and at about 8 inches by 5 inches will fit into most bags. Note that this particular Coby
Kyros has 4 Gb of built-in memory. Tablet features a microSD card slot for upgrading the
storage capacity up to 32GB.
What customers say
One of the main customer criticisms is that this is not true Android technology as it does not
have full access to the Android Apps. Enterprising users have found ways round this; through
uploading Amazon apps; or using a You Tube tweak to root it to run full Android apps library; or
going to a site, android tablets dot net, following a few instructions and downloading what you
need onto a SD card, without the need to root your tablet and void its warranty. Top marks from
customers who love its flash capability, think colors and definition for video are superb and are
amazed at the functionality for such a low price. Thumbs down was given for lack of Apps, the
resistive screen, many prefer a capacitative screen, and the occasional poor surfing performance.
However, all reviewers agreed that you get a lot of iPad-like features for half the price.
Overall verdict
Better value for money than many comparable tablets, but some functionality is slow and
limited.
