ffects pedals get
used a fair bit with
synths but it’s
possibly fair to say
that most synthesists
aren’t regularly using
them with their feet
– which seems a waste! When it
comes to modular that seems even
stranger as there can be so many
things happening at once.
In steps ADDAC, with their 311,
a way of getting your feet active with
your modular rig. The kit is
comprised of a 6hp module that
connects to a fl oor-standing unit that
can take up to fi ve expression
pedals. That in itself opens up a
world of possibilities, with the
switches acting as gates, latches or
triggers with corresponding patch
points on the module.
Just for kicks
Having the ability to use your feet to
modulate, instead of relying on other
means, is useful. Of course there’s
no harm still using classic
modulation modules but an extra
way of interacting, with a more
organic, human touch can only be a
good thing really.
If the range of the expression
pedal isn’t right for the task at hand
gear collection it’s a thoughtful touch
that exemplifi es ADDAC’s wider
design ethos.
The only issue I had, which may
not be a problem for others, and is
only a small grumble for me, is that
the cable connection on the module
is to the right of some patch points.
It’s not a big deal but, as I like this
kind of thing to the bottom left of my
rig I’d have preferred it to the left, as
the cable is thick and heavy. I could
have simply installed it upside down
but that would have irked me too.
In reality, once installed I forgot
about that and revelled in the new
possibilities for musical creation and
performance use.
but you like the full movement,
ADDAC have thought about this for
you too, as each pedal input has an
attenuverter, as well as a polarity
switch, so you can reverse the effect
front to back. Good job ADDAC.
I’m sometimes slightly wary of
the ability of fl oor-mounted gear to
withstand rigorous use, as a number
of guitar effects have failed for me
over the years – but the build of the
ADDAC is confi dence-inspiring. The
fl oor unit has a solid metal
construction, the pedals feel like
they will take life on the road or in
the studio well, the module is typical
ADDAC quality and even the
connecting cable feels very robust
and attaches solidly at each end.
Something for everyone
Another nice touch is the attention to
design for different use cases. Inside
the foot pedal unit, channels 4 and
5 have jumpers, so that pedals that
don’t conform to the TRS standard
can be used. These different
standards are less frequently used by
pedal manufacturers but they are out
there, so it’s good to see ADDAC
taking that into consideration. Less
of an issue for those starting their
pedal journey, who can buy TRS
from the off, but for those with a
