; No Drilling Necessary
; No Special Tools Needed
Does this only work with Adjust-A-Grate window well covers?
Adjust-A-Grate Inc. can provide longer cables for use with the security kit when needed. Please
contact us directly to order a longer cable for your needs.
What if my well is deeper than 6 feet?
The security kit has been engineered to specically attach to Adjust-A-Grates, however we
have heard from numerous customers who have successfully modied the way the security kit
attaches to different styles of grates.
Expanded Metal Grates (diamond pattern):
Remove the top clip and discard it but keep the bolts. Purchase 2 fender washers and run the
bolts through the fender washers through the holes on your grate and into the bottom clip of the
security kit. You may want to take the bolts with you when you purchase the fender washers so
that you can ensure they will t through the hole in the washer. It is best to try to keep the cable of
the security kit as close to the center of your grate as possible.
Bar Grates:
The other option is to purchase a ¼” x 1” x 1 ¾” U Bolt and replace the top clip and the bolts
included in the security kit with the U Bolt. The last dimension on the U Bolt is for the height so
one a little longer could be necessary depending on the thickness of the bars in your particular
grate. Again you would want to position the security kit as close to the center of your grate as
possible.
Please note that hardware to adapt the Security Kit for use with a non Adjust-A-Grate brand grate
is not included and must be purchased separately.
The security kit (with the exception of Model SKC) has a tension bar that needs to be well
tightened to prevent the grate above from being lifted. One side is what we call the foot and is
what you see in the image to the left in the groove of the corrugated metal well. The other end
of the tension bar has a hardened steel point that will create an indentation in your foundation
to help secure the bar. It is important that this steel point go into the foundation and not your
window frame or window buck to ensure your home remains weather tight. It’s possible the steel
point can cause damage to the window, window frame, or window buck if the bar is not properly
installed. Some customers have found they need to dig out a few inches of dirt in the bottom of
the window well to properly access the correct position.
Why is it important to install the tension bar into the foundation wall?
Yes, while the Adjust-A-Grate Security Kit was originally designed for use with steel corrugated
metal wells, it is still suitable for use with metal and concrete window wells. We recommend,
particularly with concrete wells that have a smooth service that you position the foot end ( as
described in the directions) of the tension bar slightly lower than that of the point end prior to
tightening. This way even if someone was somehow able to obtain enough leverage to pull on the
grate above the security tension bar is further wedging itself into the well as they pull up.
Can I use this with a wood or concrete window well?
