Bottom Line: Content-aware scaling is one of those features
that need to be seen to be believed.
What is it all about?
Content-aware scaling is one of
the most impressive features in
PhotoshopCS4. It allows you to
stretch or squeeze an image in a way
that preserves zones of high detail
(in our example, the bubbles), while
streching portions with lower detail
(the background).
How do I use it?
All you need to do is to select a
layer or a portion of a Photoshop
composition, and then choose
Content-Aware Scaling from the Edit
menu. You can then push and pull the
image both horizontally and vertically.
PhotoshopCS4 will do its best to
scale the image. You can also select
specic portions in the image to be
protected from the scaling process.
On the left, the top
image was simply
resampled to t the
new proportions of the
frame without using
content-aware scaling.
On the right, the image
has been resized using
content-aware scaling.
e whole process took
only a few seconds.
Content-aware
scaling makes it
possible to transform
a horizontal image
into a vertical one.
t Content-aware scaling lets you
adjust images in a few minutes that
would have required many hours of
painstaking retouching before.
t Software:
Photoshop CS4
t Content-aware scaling
does not work with
all images, but when
it does, it produces
stunning results.
t In last-minute design
changes, content-aware
scaling can provide
precious and speedy
help for adapting
images to new layout
constraints.
