To convert Word styles to InCopy styles
Before youimportaWord document into astand-alone InCopy document,you canmap each styleusedinWordto
an InCopy style. By doing so, you specify which styles InCopy uses to format the imported text. A disk icon
appears next to each imported Word style until you edit the style in InDesign.
1 Do one of the following:
To add the Word document to existing text, choose File > Place. Select Show Import Options, and then double-
click the Word document.
To open the Word document in a stand-alone InCopy document, choose File > Open, and then double-click the
Word file.
2 Select Preserve Styles and Formatting From Text and Tables.
3 Select Customized Style Import, and then click Style Mapping.
4 In the Style Mapping dialog box, select the Word style, and then select an option from the menu under InCopy
style. You can choose the following options:
If there is no style name conflict, choose New Paragraph Style, New Character Style, or choose an existing InCopy
style.
If there is a style name conflict, choose Redefine InCopy Style to format the imported style text with the Word
style. Choose an existing InCopy style to format the imported style text with the InCopy style. Choose Auto
Rename to rename the Word style.
5 Click OK to close the Style Mapping dialog box, and then click OK to import the document.

To edit styles
When you change the definition of a style, all of the text formatted with that style changes to match the new style
definition.
Note: If you edit styles in content linked to an InDesign document, the modifications are overridden when the linked
content is updated.
1 Do one of the following:
If you don’t want the style to be applied to selected text, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) the style
name in the styles palette, and choose Edit [Style name].
Double-click the style name in the styles palette. Note that this applies the style to any selected text or, if no text is
selected, sets the style as the default style for any text you type in new frames.
2 Adjust settings in the dialog box, and click OK.
To redefine a style to match selected text
If a story is not linked to an InDesign layout, you can redefine a style to match the formatting of text you select. When
you change the definition of a style, all of the text formatted with that style changes to match the new style definition.
