To create hanging punctuation
Optical Margin Alignment controls whether punctuation marks and edges of letters hang outside the text margins,
so that the type looks aligned.
Before (left) and after (right) applying Optical Margin Alignment
When a punctuation character is followed by an end quotation mark, both characters hang. Optical Margin
Alignment applies to all frames in the story.
1 Using the Type tool , click an insertion point in the story.
2 Choose Type > Story.
3 Select Optical Margin Alignment.
4 Select a font size to set the appropriate amount of overhang for the size of type in your story. For optimal results,
use the same size as the text.
Aligning text
Text alignment
Text is s ai d t o b e justified when it is aligned with both edges. You can justify all text in a paragraph excluding the last
line (Justify Left or Justify Right), or you can justify text in a paragraph including the last line (Justify All). When you
have only a few characters on the last line, you may want to use a special end-of-story character and create a flush
space.
Justify with last line aligned left (left) and Justify all lines (right)
When you justify all lines of text and you are using the Adobe Paragraph Composer, InCopy shifts text from line to
line to ensure that the paragraph has consistent text density and is visually appealing.
