About This Manual This manual is written for system administrators who are responsible for configuring, monitoring, and maintaining a Local Area Network (LAN) of which Allied Telesyn’s AT-MR908TX hubs are components. The contents of each chapter are described below: ❑ Chapter 1, “Product Description,” gives an overview of the features, package contents, connections and LED Status Indicators of the Standalone/Stackable AT-MR908TX hub.

AT-MR908TX Hub Installation Manual Bulletin Board Services A bulletin board is available. The number is: 206-483-7979 Modem settings for the bulletin board are: 8 bits; no parity; 1 stop bit. The process is straightforward: Once the BBS is accessed, it requests that you register either as a new user or as a current user. It then provides instructions on the various features and functions available. This is followed by a list and description of all available technical notes and files that can be downloaded.
Chapter 1 Product Description Overview The AT-MR908TX hub is an economical and reliable Fast Ethernet 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) device with eight (8) 100BASE-TX ports. A MDI/MDI-X slide switch on the back panel lets you select Port 1 to cascade two hubs together for network expansion. Network Cascade Expansion. Network expansion means that any two hubs may be cascaded through Port 1 of one hub in one stack to any port (other than Port 1) on any hub in a second stack.

AT-MR908TX Installation Manual Product Models Six different models of the AT-MR908TX hub are available, depending on voltage, power cords, and configuration options. Table 1 on page 3 details the six model types. Product Description Light-emitting Diodes (LEDs) Figure 2 shows the location of the LEDs on the front panel. This faceplate is common to all AT-MR908TX models.
AT-MR908TX Installation Manual Table 2 details the purpose, color, and functional description of each LED.
Product Description Stackable/Cascade Hub. An AT-MR901 stacking module, cable, and brackets are used to stack two or more hubs together. Installed in the back panel of the AT-MR908TX-19A, AT-MR908TX-29A or AT-MR908TX-39A, the module enables you to stack up to six (6) units. The stacking port provides full interhub connectivity. Figure 4 shows the back panel with the AT-MR901 stacking module installed.
Chapter 2 Installation Site Requirements Ventilation. All AT-MR908TX hubs have an internal fan and openings on both sides for ventilation. Note Make sure the ventilation openings on the unit are not blocked. Maximum ambient operating temperature is 122° F (50° C). Maximum ambient storage temperature is from 14° F to 158° F (-10° C to 70° C). Power. AT-MR908TX hubs have an internal universal power supply rated at 100 to 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz.
Installation Network Specifications Table 3 provides an overview of IEEE 802.3 and 802.3u specifications for 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX network configurations using twisted-pair wiring. Table 3: IEEE 802.3 and 802.

Installation The following models incorporate ATI’s AT-MR901 stacking module. This module enables you to stack up to six units such that they appear to be a single logical hub within a single Ethernet collision domain: ❑ AT-MR908TX-19A ❑ AT-MR908TX-29A ❑ AT-MR908TX-39A Standalone Installation In a standalone configuration, the AT-MR908TX hub supports up to a maximum of eight network nodes, as shown in Figure 5.
AT-MR908TX Installation Manual 2. Remove all equipment from the packing box and store the box and packing materials in a safe place. That is, the unit may need to be transferred in the future. 3. Insert the female end of the power cord into the Power Receptacle on the back of the unit. 4. Insert the male end of the power cord into an electrical output of the appropriate power. 5. Check the front panel of the hub to make sure the green power (PWR) LED is illuminated. 6.
Installation Cascading With Fast Ethernet Two AT-MR908TX hubs can be cascaded to enable support for up to a maximum of 14 network port connections. The Two-Repeater Rule. Because of the Two Repeater Rule for IEEE 802.3u, the maximum number of Class II hubs allowed in a cascaded configuration is two. That is, the IEEE 802.

AT-MR908TX Installation Manual Stacked Installation AT-MR908TX-19A, AT-MR908TX-29A and AT-MR908TX-39A models are designed to operate together with other similar models in a stacked hub configuration. In this configuration, all hubs in the stack logically appear to your network as a single hub and will, subsequently, support up to 48 network nodes.
Installation AT-MR901 Stacking Module. An AT-MR901 Stacking Module upgrade package includes the following: AT-MR901 Stacking module SCSI II Stacking cable Stacking brackets and screws 1. Ensure that your AT-MR908TX is not connected to a power source. Note Electrostatic Discharge Precautions. Static electricity can damage electronic components of a computer or optional equipment.
AT-MR908TX Installation Manual 4. Secure the stacking module in place with the four screws you removed in Step 2 above. Chassis or Stacking Brackets. You are now ready to connect the AT-MR908TX hub with another ATMR908TX hub using the SCSI II Stacking cable. Use the following procedures to connect multiple AT-MR908TX units in a stacked hub configuration: 1. In a chassis, place up to six AT-MR908TX hubs such that the uplink ports on the back panel of the units align.
Installation 8. Plug all 100BASE-TX cables in the 100BASE-TX network ports (RJ-45 connectors) on the back panel of each unit. You are now ready to operate your 100BASE-TX network in a stacked hub configuration. Stacked/Cascaded Installation First, recall that the basic 803.2u rule is that, for cascading Fast Ethernet networks, the maximum number of Class II repeaters in the data path between any two nodes cannot exceed two.
AT-MR908TX Installation Manual Second, you are referred to the information previously presented on cascading. This process will, in turn, allow you to electronically combine the two separate stacks of hubs into a single network or collision domain. Combining this information will result in a stacked/cascaded installation as shown in Figure 11. For simplicity, only two hubs are shown in each stack.
Chapter 3 Troubleshooting Connectivity Testing Follow the steps outlined below to test for a valid connection as well as to confirm the correct operation of the network. 1. Connect port 1 and port 2 of a single AT-MR908TX to two nodes or workstations and turn on the hub power supply by connecting the AC power cord. 2. Check to make sure the Link/Activity LEDs of both port 1 and port 2 are illuminated. 3.
Troubleshooting Troubleshooting Is the unit receiving power?Check the power (PWR) LED on the front of the AT-MR908TX. This green LED should be illuminated. If the power LED is not on, check both ends of the AC power cord. Make sure the power cord is plugged into a functioning wall outlet and that it is properly inserted into the AT-MR908TX power receptacle on the back of the unit. Note There is no “power” switch on the AT-MR980TX. If the power cord is properly connected, the hub should be receiving power.
AT-MR908TX Installation Manual — When Port 1 of the AT-MR908TX is not connected to another hub but is used to connect to a workstation or other equipment, you should set the MDI/MDI-X slide switch to MDI-X. 4. Problem 4: There is signal loss between the hub and one of the attached network nodes. ❑ Solution 4: — Make sure the distance between the hub and the connected network device is no greater than 100 meters. — Make sure you are using Category 5 cable.

Appendix B Glossary 10BASE2—Also called thin Ethernet, thinnet or CheaperNet, a 10 MHz baseband specification. Cable impedance is 50 Ω and maximum coaxial segment length is 185 meters (607 ft.). 10BASE5—Also called thick Ethernet, a 10 MHz baseband specification. Cable impedance is 50 Ω and maximum coaxial segment is 500 meters (1,640 ft.). The cable is commonly referred to as yellow cable. Thick Ethernet cable is typically used as a trunk or backbone path of the network. 10BASE-T—IEEE 802.3 UTP Ethernet.
Glossary CARRIER SENSE—In a LAN, an ongoing activity of a data station to detect whether another station is transmitting. CARRIER SENSE MULTIPLE ACCESS with COLLISION DETECT (CSMA/ CD)—This is the access method employed by IEEE 802.3 LAN transceivers, by which multiple stations compete for use of the transmission medium (coax cable) for data packet transmission. It provides for a level of error detection should that transmission be corrupted or impeded by contention for the transmission medium.
AT-MR908TX Installation Manual HOUSE WIRING—House wiring is the existing wiring inside a building. This wiring generally originates from one or more wiring closets, such as a telephone room. Some older buildings may have wiring unsuitable for 10 megabit data rates. In these circumstances, it is recommended that the wiring be tested with a 10BASE-T signal/wire tester. HUB/REPEATER—A hub is a central signal distributor.
Glossary MEDIUM DEPENDENT INTERFACE (MDI)—The mechanical and electrical interface between a hub and a transceiver (MAU). MDI-X is another version of the interface that enables hubs to connect using different pin-outs, thereby avoiding conflicts that occur when receiving and transmitting packets use the same pin-out. N-SERIES—A barrel shaped, threaded connector used on 10BASE5 (thick Ethernet) coaxial cable. PATCH PANEL—A 10BASE-T patch panel may be used between a punch-down block and UTP workstation.
AT-MR908TX Installation Manual THIN ETHERNET—See 10BASE2 TRUNK CABLE—The coaxial cable used to distribute signals over long distances throughout a cable system. UNSHIELDED TWISTED PAIR (UTP)—A cable used in 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T wiring that consists of at least two twisted pairs of 22 to 26 AWG wire. The pairs should have at least 3 twists per foot and have an impedance of 100 Ω. Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5 UTP cables fit these criteria.
