Segmented
Backplane
In a 7-slot chassis with a segmented backplane, you can install up to six
TurboStack hubs (i.e., one Master and five manageable modules). The
seventh slot is available for a switch.
As shown in Figure 5, the 7-slot TurboStack department concentrator
chassis incorporates a factory-installed segmented backplane.
In a department concentrator configuration with segmented backplane,
the Master unit provides management through the management bus. The
flow of data to/from each port on an installed hub module and the network
backbone is governed by the switch module in the bottom chassis slot. (As
shown in Figure 5, the backplane receptacle for the switch module is offset
from the other backplane receptacles.)
Master
Module
TurboStack chassis slots are numbered from 1 through 7, top to bottom.
The Master is defined as the module in the lowest-numbered (physically
topmost) occupied chassis slot. Typically this is slot 1, but it could be any
one of slots 2 through 6 if the slot(s) above are vacant.
Backup
Module
A second management-capable hub may be installed in the slot directly
below the Master (except slot 7) to serve as a Backup management unit.
This special module always occupies the next higher-numbered slot
position below the Master so it can immediately take over the Master’s
functions if necessary.
