How to Guide

Flame-treated Shutter Painting Instructions
We have done the “priming” already so the customer will just need paint. The flame treating
process makes the pours of the plastic surface expand allowing the paint to stick. The customer
can use either latex or oil-based paint made for plastic. Previously we recommended only oil-
based because we were priming rather than flame treating. If a customer does receive a primed
shutter, oil-based paint is the recommendation.
Non-treated Shutter Painting Instructions
Shutters will need to be primed with a primer made for plastics. We recommend the Kilz brand
and Rustolium. Valspar in the aerosol can also worked well for priming. Either a latex or oil
based paint that is made for plastic will work after the primer is dried according to the
manufacturer’s directions.
Note: Paint drying time will vary due to weather conditions. It may feel dry to the touch, but will
not be completely cured for 7-14 days. Do not attempt to peel or scratch the paint until it has
completely cured.
